Our Inspiron 600M died - won't turn on. We have been told it's probably the power switch in the mother board, a known defect. We liked our Dell and were going to replace it with another one figgering Dell had fixed the problem. The very first review of the Inspiron 1420 in Dell's own website detailed a problem exactly the same as the one we had experienced. Called Dells customer service, and after going through two rep's, finally got a supervisor that confirmed the problem still exists - Three years later! What the ****? Over! What's a person to buy? Anyone with advise or opinions on this?

I have a 1520 and the power button works fine. However, if you're fed up with Dell, buy a laptop from a different company.

Specifically the motherboard feels like it gives when you push down on it. If yours does too you may be headed for a problem down the road.

my 1420 power button works just fine (although I don't use it that often honestly, just close the lid to put it to sleep, open it to turn it back on)

If every laptop that had give when pushing the power button failed, everyones laptop would eventually fail.

Since every laptop has yet to fail... it probably won't happen ;)

the inspiron 600m power button is on the plastic hinge cover, there's just a circuit that connects to the motherboard. so it's not the actual motherboard that gives, when you press on it
