Just a heads up for anyone thinking about buying from Dell. If the price drops the next day after your order, Dell will not honor a low price guarantee. All major electronic store will have a 30 day policy and refund the difference. MY XPS M140 was 840.00 a couple of weeks ago but it came with a "free" Dell MP3 Player. Waited till they drop the MP3 player and they did and the price went down to 749.00.
Great, so I place my order and a week later, I look at the website and it is now 649.00. Exact configuration. Chatted with Dell Customer Service in India and "sorry no can help" and a $50.00 coupon was the best they can do. They can only offer me a coupon to buy something from them that may go lower in price after I buy it.
Am I over reacting? Do all of you Dell buyers accept this as part of life? That if I want to avoid this, I am better off buying it from a store?

Dell isn't a major electronic store. You can't compare Dell to Circuit City, Best Buy, or any retail electronics outlet. I have no qualms with Dell's business model. I don't think Apple, HP, or any other computer company has any type of "30 day price match if we drop our prices" guarantee. 'Tis the way of the computer world - it's the nature of the beast to buy a computer only to see it drop in price almost immediately after you buy it.

I think you can just return your M140 and order a new one for the 649.00 price you want

If I'm not wrong Apple does have something similar.
I heard many people who got Imac G5 were able to exchange to Imac core duo with only a restock fee. -
that's kinda wierd isn't it though...
i'll buy it, return it on the 25th day, or if they dropped their price a bit, get a refund in the difference.
and i'll keep on doing it forever or until the price drops to zero. -
i think its 21 days with dell and they hit you with a 15% restocking fee.

I had some similar situation when I ordered the Dell Inspiron 6000 last March. When I received it, there was a price drop to 40% off. When I calculated the configuration the difference was $100. I sweet talked my Indian friend from Delhi to send me another 9 cell battery and call it even. Shabash! It was there on my doorstep within the week. 'Shukriyah, I said with a smile.
I haven't seen a price drop since I received my machine but if there is one within the next 85 or so days. American Express will refund the difference. I believe. -
Funny that this post came up for me - I just ordered a Inspiron 9400 and the price dropped $151 after it shipped...It hasn't even got here, and Dell still refused to give me any credit...First they offered a $50 coupon, then $75 back...I suggested that I refuse shipment on it and they said that it was the only way...I further explained to them that Dell was eating the cost on this (due to their nice return policy) and they said they didn't care...
In the end, it was really a blessing...My new config has 80 gigs instead of 60, the 9 cell battery instead of 6, and a 7800go instead of the ATI...
I was concerned about the 40 day estimated ship date because of the 7800go, but the status now shows as boxed, so I lucked out, especially since I just placed the order a few days ago... -

I've returned opened / used notebooks from dell and purchased the same model just less expensive. No penalty.

Thanks for all your reply and input. We learn something new everyday. Hopefully, I am a better person for that. After my rage settled down, I re-check the website. Sorry, Dell, I was wrong, it was not the "exact configuration". It took out the Corel Wordperfect Office Suite retail value at $100.00.
Now if the India Customer Service Rep had explained that to me, then I would have understood and let it go. Instead they kept inserting pre-written statements saying they can't do anything. It was like talking to a wall.
From reading others posting, I guess this is the norm for DELL. Buy today and their price can drop again the following day. Okay, I guess I can make it up to DELL by using the $50.00 Dell coupon the Rep promise to send me. With my luck the price went up $50.00 anyway. -
Get on Chat with the Sales department via the support web page. Tell them you want the price adjusted or you will return the unit via your 21 day return policy. This usually gets them to do what it is you want, if not, order another and return your orginal purchase. You won't be penalized.
