Does dell provide price protection? and if so how long on laptops? I am debating between a Hp and Dell right now, and I know HP has one, without returning the laptop, they just credit you back any price drops...

That's interesting, I have never heard of that. I know that CompUSA does something like that for printers, but I would doubt that the same goes for Dell. You can always call them up and find out.

When I tried to puchase my XPS M140, I had a similar issue because a deal came out that made my configuration cheaper (involved a product code of some sorts to get the deal). I called in, and Dell said they had a 30 day policy...but from experience with that call, they will try like none other to find excuses to not give a price difference refund.

Overall, I'm sure that if you push them hard enough, they might refund the difference.

They used to refund the difference if it was $50 or more, exlcuding coupons and specials. They had a forum on Dell Talk where you could request a price check (once per customer) and you would occasionally see someone get a refund. But it was rare.

I'll bet HP has similiar restrictions. And with Dell's 21 day return policy you kind of have a defacto price guarantee. I'll bet if you ask for an RMA because of a price drop they will make you an offer to avoid that.

As long as the price doesn't go down because of a coupon. What I just do is cancell the order then reorder it at the lower price
