Didn't mean to hurt any maclover's feelings here, but I seriously think the Dell looks cooler and more solid (thanks to an aluminum extrusion and carbon-fiber chassis) than the recently unveiled Macbook Air. I mean c'mon. The latter looks like a huge iPod nano.

With the same overall thickness as the thickest part of the Macbook, the Dell features a slot optical drive-something the Macbook doesn't even have (thus presenting the need to keep a USB optical drive close). The Dell will also have AT LEAST 2 USB slots as opposed to the Mac's 1 USB slot (a no-no for people who have multiple gadgets). Given that the Mac somewhat follows the iPod's architecture, it is impossible to open it up from the bottom and upgrade its hardware.

The only advantage that I can think of for the Mac is it's 13.3 inch screen (The Dell's is 12.1). Both feature LED-backlit screens which reduce their thickness. The Mac measures 0.16 inches on it's thinnest side and 0.76 inches on it's thickest side, whilst the Dell is rumored to measure 0.78 flat.

Since the Dell is only a prototype and no specs have been released aside from screen size, I can't really expound more on why I think the Dell is better, but I'm sure we'll get more information as the days pass. I can't wait to get my hands on one!

Thanks for posting this thread so I didn't have to! :D
The MBA is just definitely not as practical as the projected Dell. :p

Oh yeah, the MBA gets some beauty points, but can't really stand up to a carbon fiber chassis and aluminum case. Added to which that Dell has some beauty points of its own...

I sure hope it becomes a reality, and soon.

I do want to note that it is a prototype, and may never make it to the market...maybe because its components cost too much, or the cost of building is too high, whereas the MacBook Air is already in production, and not just a prototype.

I do like some of the innovations on this Dell prototype, if it can make it into the market that'd be great. It reminds me of the older generation HP Pavilions ;).

wow, that Dell looks awesome. let's just hope they make it so that the user can replace their own batteries (unlike the MBA  )

    Yeah, dude.

I'd love a good 12.1" Dell such as this.

This Dell is not a 12"... we had a discussion about it already in another thread... it's like a 15.4" or 16". Otherwise there wouldn't be so much space on the sides of the keyboard for the speakers.

Yes, I also agree, it can’t be a 12.1 or 13.1. Should be at least 15.4 or larger. Therefore it is not a direct competitor.
