    Done!

And an interesting move, perhaps it could be a shortage?

i seriously doubt it's a heat issue. because dell builds-to-order, they play a complex game with their vendors in terms of inventory. this means that over the past, specific HDs, GPUs, etc. fall off the config page and reappear a couple days later.

there's already a thread on this too

I'm having an issue.....Sometimes, while rebooting (right after the splash screen) My XPS 1210 will get stuck on a pitch black screen with a blinking cursor on the upper left. The first time it happend, I resetted the bios and it booted fine. It's intermittent, but last time it happened I couldn't even get into the setup menu. It seems like the computer can't find my 7200 80G drive..... I spent a few hours today trying to figure out what's wrong, back and forth with Dell and no one knows what to do....

i doubt that has anything to do with your drive being a 7200rpm spec.

okay so i'm like all ready to buy this thing, but i wanted the 7200 rpm HD. they still haven't brought it back. i asked the live chat guy if it was coming back, he said yes but he couldnt say when. then i asked for an approximation like weeks? months? and he said he couldn't say. what's the story dell? i want to buy this thing and dell is seriously dropping the ball.

Well its not Dell's fault, there is obvioulsy a major shortage of 7200RPM drives, and dell cant get enough supply to support the demand so they are temporarly removing the option untill they get more. Just be patient and wait it out, they will be back. And dont blame the guy for not knowing, nobody does. I mean they dont know what the exact demand for them will be or how many they will sell, you should be glad that dell be being safe about the thing and not taking orders for them, then in turn making you wait months for your system because of the drive.

I didnt believe this until when I was about to purchase an m1210 after looking at it many times before on their website. I wanted to know more, so I went to my local Mall here in Indianapolis which has a Dell Kiosk in the center of the mall, and I asked the Dell Rep. She said she didnt even know about it, she pulled it up on her computer and was shocked to find it missing out of the options, she then asked me if I could wait and she would make a call about it and find out what is going on...well I waited for a few minutes and this was what the person on the other line told her

"The only model that has ever had the 100gig 7200rpm HD was the e1705, the xps m1210, e1405, or e1505 have never had the 100gig 7200rpm HD as an option" what the?

for the nth time; it's a supply issue; it's happened in the past and will happen again in the future.

if you really want a 7200 rpm drive that bad, buy the computer and get a 7200 rpm drive aftermarket. it'll be cheaper anyway.

Not true! I have a E1505 with a Seagate 100 Gb 7200 RPM drive purchase in July 2006. It does get pretty hot though so take that into consideration.

i cancelled my order a day after i placed it because i realized i can't live without a 7200 rpm, this was 2 days ago. i got a phone call by the dell rep yesterday, she tried really hard to get one included, but the best she could do was charge me full price...lol for an additional hard drive available through dell parts. the 100gb @ 7200 rpm's go for around 400 bucks, so i denied it, said i'd pay a small upgrade fee at most, but no response yet. i have my money ready, i bet a ton of people are waiting.

it would be nice if they somehow addressed the issue on their website. the way it is now, it just looks like they're trying to hide something. furthermore, they should give notice once the 7200rpm's are restocked. that way, i don't have to keep checking the website, going through all those stupid steps to customize the laptop to see which HD's are available, only to find that it is still unavailable.

    how annoying.

if Dell is having a supply issue with the 7200 drives, it is almost *guaranteed* that other vendors will have the same problem. the only way to avoid that is to purchase a pre-made configuration that is in stock and READY to ship.

just for the record, i'm starting to think that the 7200 drive issue is what is delaying my shipment of the new notebook in my sig.

Not suprising at all. Again its a suppy problem, there arnt enough 7200's out there to go around now. If you want to blame anyone blame yourself, the consumer for buying too many of them :)

You can't configure 9400 on the Canadian web site with any 7200RPM drives anymore as well. That happened just 3 days after I bought my system with a 100gb (September 7th) :)

I talked with a XPS Rep online a few minutes ago, and this is what I asked and what I was told....

Me: the Dell XPS M1210 used to have a 100gig 7200rpm HD option, I was considering ordering it with that, but its gone, why?

XPS Rep Julia: Thank you for choosing Dell's Digital Home XPS Experience. My name is Julia, I will be your personal assistant today. In case we get disconnected, you can contact me at [email protected]. After we’re done, I would also appreciate it if you let my manager know how I did: [email protected]. Give me a moment to review your concern. Please don't go away.

    5minutes later.......

    XPS Rep Julia
: That was a marketing decision. I do not know why they took it off or when/if they will bring it back.

Me: so it was not removed because of supply?

XPS Rep Julia: Like I said it was a marketing decision. I do not know why it was taken off.

Me: ok I had another question, what RPM speed is the 160gig HD option for the m1210 , because it is not listed.

    XPS Rep Julia: 5400 rpm

    Me: ok thank you

XPS Rep Julia: No Problem. Any other questions? Or can I help you customize a system?

***(my thoughts: heck no i wont customize a system, no 7200rpm HD config :( )

do'nt believe everything a sales rep tells you. i'd bet dollars to donuts it's a supply issue. (did you backread and see the post that HP dropped them as well?)

hmm, i dont think its a supply issue. i just got a replacement laptop and it came with a 80GB 7200RPM and i used to have a 80GB 5400PRM hdd. but since dell screwed up the other parts of my replacement, im just gonna swap the hard drives...
