I'm planning on replacing my 6 yr. old Dell 5000e this year. However, I've read a couple of posts about chips and scratches on newer model Dell laptops. There isn't a single chip or scratch on my 5000e after years of daily use and abuse.
Are the newer models more prone to scratching and chips like an iPod?![]()

Hi thetick,
IMO the inspiron line seems to chip and scratch easily, but its mainly because of the paint job. The common white bumpers are just white paint over silver. The silver palm rests scratch very easy.
The RAM cover on some of the Inspiron models is painted over and because the area gets very hot, the paint does come off easily.
I've seen some complaints about the lid scratching easily, but some of the laptops have covers to protect them called QuickSnaps.

I agree that the palm rests and paint scratches off pretty easily, but I must say that I'm pretty impressed with the E1705's overall build quality - the magnesium alloy lid/base really make this notebook feel solid IMO.
