Why doesn't Dell offer the 7200rpm hard drive with the inspiron 1720 laptop. 5400 rpm's have been around so long and are out dated. What gives?

Buy whatever drive(s) you want on newegg and just stick it in there.
You'll have to reinstall Windows, but they should give you the discs to do so.

I love Seagate harddrives. I would choose to get a Seagate hard drive from newegg rather then getting a random hard drive from Dell anyday. Seagates unrivaled 5 year warranty!! :D so sexy.

I ordered dual 7200's in my 1720... again, in Canada.
I just went back and checked the site, and they are no longer being offered. Maybe there is a supply issue now with these too.

If you do install your own 7200RPM drive, just remember that you either have to disable AHCI in the BIOS to reinstall Vista, or install Dell's SATA driver during the Vista install. Otherwise, Vista won't boot. Just an FYI :)

Now it is offered, but (the same story) not the existing more advanced 200GB 7200rpm, which goes only into the XPS line. Can we order from Dell Canada?

I've never seen an option for dual 7200rpm drives in the 1720.
It's only recently I saw the single 160GB 7200rpm drive offered for the 1720.

But here's my link collection regarding installing a second 7200rpm drive yourself

dell always charges hard drives much more than market price. why not buy elsewhere.

I'd get the hard drive from Newegg.
Getting the caddy, etc., so you can use it in the laptop is trickier.
