    DIFFERENCES

    1)
    i5 - 520M - 2.4 ( Turbo boost - 2.9 ) ( 2/4 - Cores/Threads)
    500 GB - 7200 RPM
    Mobility Radeon 5470 - 1 GB
    Blacklit keyboard
    6 CELL
    FROM DELL SITE :- 999$ + Shipping + Tax( approx 70$ )
    and DATE : 15th June + 7 days

    2)
    i7 - 720QM - 1.6 ( Turbo boose - 2.8 ) ( 4/8 - Cores/Threads )
    320 GB - 7200 RPM
    mobility radeon 4570 - 512MB
    Standard keyboard
    9 CELL
FROM BEST BUY :- 949$ + Shipping charges
    and DATE : 9th June + ( if any? )

    ..........................
    COMMON
    4GB ram
    win 7 64 home premium
All other minor things are common.
    ........................

    MAIN CONCERNS-
Q.1) Is i7 having throttling, heating issues?
consumes LOT MORE power than i5. or just A LITTLE MORE power?
performance must be far better than i5..
and can anyone explain or put a link to understand
    why i7 - only 1.6 GHz.......is better than i5 - 2.4 GHz.... under high calculation?

Q.2) My gaming would be normal. Not a hard core gamer. So i guess 512 MB would be enough.

Q.3)I am a computer science student. So basically i would be requiring softwares for compilation, building, etc...considering that... which one is best.? Processor and GPU.??

    Q.4) MAIN CONCERN.
The person bringing it leaving from US on 17th.
So is BESTBUY the last thing i can have.
Well i can wait if FIRST laptop is better.
( i don't see anything GOOD for DELL except i5 less power and higher frequencies.)

please reply fast. considering my situation.!

    and only dell studio 15

This thread really belonged in the which laptop should I buy subforum. Anyway:

i7 is not considerably more of a power drain than i5, and it's not significantly faster for day to day tasks. Ideally you should probably get an i5 and a 9-cell.

CompSci really doesn't rely on a powerful processor as much as it does on you to write a competent program. You won't notice the difference between i5 and i7 unless you're compiling something massive and broken.

Anything over 512MB on the GPU in a laptop is usually overkill.

If you order from Dell, it's fairly likely that you'll get delayed, so you're pretty much just looking at the Best Buy model considering your time factor.

don't PM if you're going to just post it again here.

You can probably find what you're looking for in the Dell Outlet, but I don't know what the time frame is. Regardless, don't spend $1k just to regret it a little down the line. The difference between i5/i7 isn't as big as the difference between 6cell/9cell, but if you're always plugged into A/C, the point is irrelevant.

Intel HD isn't bad for gaming, but it's not good either. It'll get you by, at the added benefit of lower temps and longer battery life.

Make sure you're satisfied with what you choose to get, or at least know you can easily upgrade to it in the future. 3-6 months in the future, don't think to yourself "if only I'd waited a little longer to buy my laptop I could've gotten [x] instead"

For dual and single core applications, the I7 is going to turbo boost (2.4Ghz and 2.8Ghz).

The I5 however will be as fast and with turbo boost even faster than an I7 in dual and single core applications (2.4Ghz and 2.93Ghz).

So ... unless you are going to use applications that are specifically designed to use cores and threads ... you are going to be better off with an I5.

With that being said ... you are on a time constraint ... hence may just want to scoop up the I7 and call it good. You will still have an excellent laptop.

    i7 is quad core. I'd recommend it. 4x 1.6Ghz = Theoretical 6.4Ghz vs 2x 2.4 = Theoretical 4.8Ghz.

The i7 handles a ridiculous amount of multitasking capabilities as it has 8 threads and having used both an i5 and i7 I'd say as a student it's very useful to have 4cores these days than it is to have 2. The 5470 GPU isnt' all that and you wont really notice any gain over a 4570 tbh. I'd go for the i7 personally. It's future proof and amazing... beats the s..t outta most things on the market these days.
