Is dell going to refresh the dell studio 17 soon with a 4xxx series ati card?
-
If they are, it hasn't been announced.
-
probably the same 4650 ati card HP upgraded to, just another massive bulk account for Ati.
and DDR3 ram.
It won't be a new chipset jump like Montievenia was.
I finally got what I wanted in Montenveniea when I bought my 1737 back in Dec 2008 45nm decent GPU, DDR2 RAM, good battery life
plenty of ports and slots, backlit keyboard. RGB LED great colors.
This 1737 should keep me happy
Until laptops hit 28nm cpu's and DDR5 in the GPU's in mainstream systems. -

I've been wondering about this, too...
I'm thinking it will make the switch to a 16:9 aspect ratio display (perhaps 17.3" or even a 16.4"). An upgrade to the ATI 4650 seems like a logical move.
I've also wondered if they might just discontinue the Studio 17 altogether. They've got the-
Studio XPS 13 - 13.3"
Studio 14z - 14.0"
Studio 1555 - 15.6"
Studio XPS 16 - 16.0"
But there is a significant market for mainstream notebooks with larger than 16" displays, so dropping it doesn't make a lot of sense... -
Maybe they'll turn it into Dell's first 18.4 incher.
They've got all the other sizes covered.

mini's 9, 10, 11, 12, inspiron/xps 13, inspiron/studio 14, inspiron 15, xps 16, alienware 17... and...
the gigantitron studio-xpsware 18! -

Dell's entire branding strategy continues to be very puzzling...making me wonder if they even have any sort of plan at all!
The Inspiron line is taking shape as basic, low-priced offerings in a few different sizes:
The Mini lineup (soon to be the 1010, 1011 and 1110) *1110 replaces the 1210
Inspiron 1318 - 13.3" (due for replacement...or may be replaced by upcoming Intel CULV-based ultra-thin)
Inspiron 1545 - 15.6"
*NOTE- the ancient Inspiron 1420 is on borrowed time, so it doesn't count.
Blending the Studio and XPS lines still doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I understand the business case for it, but the Studio 1440/1555/1737 have absolutely nothing in common with the Studio XPS 1340/1640? They're night-and-day compared to one another.
*The XPS M1330 and M1530 are also closeout models, so they don't factor into here.
The M1730 replacement will likely be tagged as an Alienware model. -
When you think about it, the Studio and Studio XPS series are really made for the same main purpose: multimedia. They both have 16:9 HD resolution displays (except for the Studio 17, which presumably will too when they refresh it), and other stuff generally suited to a media laptop, like subwoofers with the integrated speakers, and relatively midrange dedicated graphics options for HD video. The Studio XPS subseries is really like a deluxe version of the Studio series: pretty much all of the same features, but a few neat extras like DDR3 memory, more powerful graphics, leather trim, much more solid build quality, etc.
I guess this means there will be other XPS subseries lines as well...Inspiron XPS? I guess we'll find out sooner or later.

I tend to buy only when its a significant update, to Capella or some other tech. Getting another laptop on the same nm die, really won't make much of a difference.
When I see a core 2 quad or a core 2 extreme at 32nm or 28nm from Intel I will then make another purchase. Looking at Intel's Roadmap I will not have to wait long.

I like the 18.4 inch idea, but I would also settle for a 17.3 or 17.1 inch FULL HD 16:9, I’m looking to get a Desktop Replacement by Christmas.
DDR3, Blue Ray (re-writeable) do they have those available for notebooks yet? and option for SSD and TV Tuner.
someone told me a few months back about a Dell Studio XPS 17 inch coming by OCT-NOV, but I haven’t read any rumors or anything official about it.
Aren’t those Nehalem Mobile processors suppose to be available by the end of the year? OCT or NOV I have to look at Intel Mobile processor map again. -
There are several notebooks with DDR3 memory and Blu-Ray RW drives. Dell's Studio XPS series has DDR3. I don't think any Dells have BD-RW drives yet, though.
-
I see dell is lowering the price of the studio 17 everyday,I hope this means we will have a refresh soon(I hope).
-
The fact that it's not eligible for the Windows 7 free upgrade is a massive clue it's going away soon.
-
Studio 17 with ATI 4670 GPU 1GB DDR3 RAM
RGB LED display
4GB DDR3 RAM
T9800 Core 2 Duo
Yes Please.
Maybe I can get $1,000 for my 1737 (doubtfull)
and therefore make my new 1747 only $600 -
I would've bought one 2 months ago if that video card was better. Still would.
