How do you know it is overheating? Is your laptop shutting down?

Download HWMonitor (free program) and post your idle, load and ambient room temperatures.

You could also buy compressed air and blow out the fan (while keeping the fan stationary), heatsinks/heatfins. Any dust/crud accumulating in there will reduce the effectiveness of dissipating heat. You could also try repasting your CPU, most Studios have very easy access to the heatsink and CPU socket.

Mine was also overheating. I had to open the case and remove the motherboard to clean the radiator and fan. The amount of dust inside looked like felt cloth, never seen anything like that in laptop.

I am facing same issue... and the laptop shuts!

Opened the laptop removed the dust still the same! i noticed that the thermal paste on proc was quite less!!! one more thing the fan that is near the proc heatsink is throwing air downwards instead of the back vent... i remember that hot air used 2 come out the back vent but now it dosent!

have attached HW monitor screen shot

My Studio 15 was playing up too. It would just boot up for 30 minutes before shutting down completely. I would have to wait for a few minutes before restarting the laptop.

I had to make a few calls to Dell and a Dell engineer came three times to fix my laptop. He changed the motherboard twice and heatsink/fan three times. I had to change to a 9 cell battery to improve on the airflow. It is now working like a charm.

    Is that Idle?
Are there alot of background processes running?

I dont see how the fan could change direction like that...very odd

Your fan does not seem to be working. Studio 15 has fan directly on the CPU and your CPU temp is to high unless you are doing some serious stuff. GPU has no fan and is more likely to warm up under gaming.
