    Hello,

I have been researching laptops for about a week and can't decide what to go with. I am a student and want a lightweight model. I have been looking at the Dell 600m, VAIO Z1VA and some toshibas. I definately want the Centrino option. Dell is cheapest it seems, but have read many reviews on their site about the 600m with many complaints. I am not a gamer. I want the most reliable laptop. ANy suggestions??
    Thanks!!![ :p]

If you want reliability, stay away from VAIO. With Sony you are also fairly limited at what you can put in the component.

Dell also has been having some quality issues but not as bad as Sony in my opinion.

Unfortunately I do not know much about the lightweight Toshiba, but Toshiba has been around the business for quite some time and has an overall good reputation for quality.

I would do more research on Toshiba, and perhaps consider Dell. Stay away from Sony.

You can read lots of review on the Dell site under Dell Support --> community, its in a forum format.

    Thanks, I found it.

Maybe it is just slow today, but It takes about 10 mins for a search.

I have been trying to find battery life for a d500 and d505.

I have a Toshiba Satellite that I got back in May 2003! Still runs today!

My only gripe is that the casing is starting to crack, but that's probably my fault.

My company got me an Precision for work (look at sig). It's been reliable, other than the nvidia driver crashing on me when I do dual display.

Overall, I love the Dell laptop. Too bad if I leave, I can't keep it =[

i have own Sony previously, and didn't enjoy it at all. It is way too heavy for travel, and battery last me about 90 minutes. I can't speak for Toshiba since i never used one, but I do love my Dell. The 9 cell battery can last me around 4 hours+, and running about 5-6 excel spread sheets plus other applications.

    Howdy studentneeds (^_^)

I have a Dell XPS M170 that has had bad RAM, bad HDD and just when my one year warranty ended the battery is dead. Good news is when the machine was covered they "next day air" the affected parts to me. Other than all the crapware, I love it (after clean install).

I also currently own a beautiful VAIO SZ-160/P for about a year and several months, NO problems. It's ridden by bike to work everyday (U-Dub) with books and food containers pressed against, been dropped on a solid floor from 4ft (which gave it very minor cosmetic damage, pics in the Sony forum) and is shared with lab techs without any wear to the palm rest or keys. I do have the space bar issue common to SZs, but not noticeable cause I use the center of the bar. I did a clean install because the crapware is just as bad as the Dell. If I had the $$$ I would love to buy the new TZ. I read up here that "With Sony you are also fairly limited at what you can put in the component". I have changed the CPU, HDD and RAM on the SZ, NO problems.

I own two Toshiba Tecra notebooks that have been the longest lasting computer I've owned. Gave one to the parents and intalled Linux on the other. Build quality is great on those. Almost bought the Protege R200 but the area around the touch pad sucked.

"This thread is from 2004. Why did you resurrect it, Eurasianman?"... WTF?! I just noticed that. Studentneeds is probably dropped out and smokin weed about now (>_<)
