It would be fraudulent and quite possibly illegal to send a pic of a laptop not your own to the dell rep. Just tell the guy you don't have a very good camera.

Shouldn't be a problem if he were to say that he doesn't have a good enough camera but he got a picture of how it looks, and that it's exactly the same on his screen.

I would say something along the lines of this:

'Would you ask me for a picture to prove that the laptop would not turn on if that was the problem? -- It's not up for discussion, the screen is grainy, when are you going to replace it?'

If they try to play hardball with you anymore after that, then just return the notebook.

Why not get a picture that will show the screen's graininess and take it direct to Dell? Seeing is believing ;)

Being able to take a good quality closeup photo of an LCD is not that easy.

Even harder if you want to attempt to get the right lighting-conditions/zoom, etc to be able to capture the grain, assuming it's even possible. If anyone has obvious example graininess photos (not photoshops), please post ..

I'd like to see, as most photos I've seen have been a blurry mess that you can't really make out the details of.

Your first mistake is dealing with them over email with this problem. You are making it easier for them to give you the run around. Just call them and tell them it's unaccpetable and needs to be replaced, or you are going to return it and buy a competitor's laptop.

First, don't email dell about this. Just call and talk directly with Dell customer support. It would be very interesting if the phone support brought up anything about pictures. Just tell them no working camera. Its not possible to capture this on camera. I expect Dell may start some games with customers to try to avoid building multiple replacement systems. In reality, they should just quit offering the wxga + displays that have plagued panel makers for quite some time.

That's ridiculous. It could be because a few people started sending back perfectly good screens. I tried for a good half hour snapping off 20 pics to post in this forum and none of them showed the graininess. What kind of genius move is it to ask consumers to take pictures of LCD flaws?

Just call back and be firm.. A replacement or refund. Also do yourself a favor and see if you can drop down to wxga display. Way too many issues with panel makers on the wxga +. Problems with bad grainy wxga + displays immediately surfaced on the new inspiron launch in June and have plagued them to this day.

These pictures were the best attempt comparing a crap AUO next to a nice LG screen. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=154196

It is illegal but why would they ask you to take a pic why not just send it in. With the way people use photshop you can make it look alot worse than what it is

Sometimes you get a dumb rep. The solution is to call back. I doubt he will get that line a second time. If dell were to start with these sorts of requests, they would lose what little reputation they have left. Better dell just drop the wxga + option then to go down that road. Personally, I thought the overseas support was very professional and always treated me with respect. Support has no control over bad displays or faulty headphone jacks in the 1500s. But every once in a while, you will read about a customer being disrespected by a Dell rep on these forums. That was indeed the case here.

From what I hear you get better results if you ring Technical Support instead of the generic customer service.

my rep wanted me to test the computer with the stupid dell diagnostics. what a joke. dell is trying to do damage control here. they have probably received more of their crappy screens back than they first guessed they would.

i had to call back over 3 times to get them to replace my laptop. keep in mind that this is after telling me it would be replaced every time- then they wouldn't do it.

call back and try again. don't be surprised if they don't send the replacement- even if they say they will! also, from what i have seen in these forums, your replacement may be worse than the original. has dell sucked this bad in the past???

I'm curious about what type of test he wanted to do in Dell Diagnostics.

there are some display tests. she said to take all of them. it will show you a screen and ask you- do you see the lines? is this red? is this white? stuff like that. there is no option for- is this screen so grainy it gives you headaches? lol.

I thought not. I couldn't find any test in there that would be of any use with picture quality.

From what I have seen and tried (my screen has slight grain when I'm really close to the screen) it is impossible to take a picture to show the grain.

Why is it so hard to believe the technician wants proof of the defect?

Now if the computer doesn't turn on do I have to send a video of how I pressed the power button and nothing happens? So I don't think you have to take a picture at all. Plus, sometimes the camera itself distorts the picture.

My 2 cents. if you cant take a picture of a bad screen being bad, then its not bad.

You can take a picture that is too blurry to see anything, and say that is the best you can do with your camera.
