Ok so I've posted some of this over in the L701x screen replacement thread but since this is really a customer service issue here it goes.
I'll skip all the hassle I've had over the past month and just say dell wants to send me a replacement system.
I've currently got a Studio 1749 with Core I5-430M l 4Gb RAM l 2x500GB HD l 1920x1080p l 9-Cell Battery l ATI 5650 1GB l dvdrw
Dell wants to send me a L701X with Core I5-460M l 6Gb RAM l 1x640GB HD l 1600x900 l 9-Cell Battery l NVIDIA GeForce GT 435M 1GB graphics with Optimus l bdrom
I realize I could swap the LCD's or buy another one for the L701X but I've still got 4 years of warranty and I'm afraid if I accept the lower resolution screen this time when I have to get this one replaced ( I don't see it lasting 4 years) they will stick me with 900p again.
I am of the opinion that the screen is the most important aspect of the laptop since that will be my primary course of interactivity.
Am I crazy or should I jump on this.....

Take it up with Dell for sure. It's unacceptable.
-
Dell is stonewalling me not giving me any option but to get a 900p screen this is ridiculous.

@OP here are some avenues you go with for contacting Dell for further resolve:
LionelatDell
Dellcares
Dell Unresolved Issues
-
lionel told me to talk to dellcares, dellcares told me to talk to the tech i got by going through the unresolved issues link....
after a month of this i even emailed [email protected] which got me a call today from a very angry tech support agent insisting i send my laptop to depot..... -
If the 1080p panel in the Studio 1749 is compatible with the L701x (it should be, and you can look here for a list of 1080p panels confirmed to work inside the L701x: http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...cial-swapping-xps-17-l701x-screen-thread.html)
you might be able to convince dell to let you send back the Studio but keep the screen inside it, and install it into your XPS 17.
Still not the best deal though, because that "my next replacement might also be 900p" thing still applies. -
the worst part of this is that in the past i had to go from 1920x1200 to the 1920x1080 so i definitely don't want 900p.....tried it and can't stand it
Dell wants to replace 1080p laptop lcd w/ 900p
