Hi - just a quick question for the board whether it's worth paying the extra for a 2 or 3 yr warranty for the E1705. I know it's a solid machine but would appreciate any and all inputs, thanks!

This is a matter of preference. Personally, I will never, ever buy an overpriced warranty - on anything.
I am very careful with my stuff and, yes, things beyond one's control can happen, but warranty buying seems like a scam to me.
If you will sleep better at night having it and you can afford it, get it. If not, don't. -
True NPeart, I agree with most of what you said that warranty for the most part are unwarranted (pun) I'm just wondering the build of the E1705 specifically. I have not heard of any major issues like overheating, screen problems or the like. Just trying to save a few bucks

It really depends on how much your spending on the laptop. If your spending 2+k for sure spend the extra $200-300. Or if you need to make the price reach 2k because your using the $750 off coupon then adding a warranty wouldn't be a bad idea.

Just from personal experience on my Inspiron 8500, that 3 year extended warantee payed for itself when my power brick went out a few months back.
From the time I got in touch w/ Dell to having the new power adapter in hand, no more than 3 days had passed, with no problems, hassles or extra costs for shipping. Otherwise, a replacement adapter would've been over US$100, plus whatever time & money it would've taken to find the friggin' thing.
Personally, whenever I end up getting my next laptop, you'd better believe it'll have an extended warantee + complete care...especially as we're planning on having kids sometime in the near future, and I don't know how many times I've heard horror stories about small children & expensive electronics -
Yeah, these are all valid points. As far as I know the E1705 does not run terribly hot and the screen (other than some graininess during DVD playback) holds up rather well. Of course I've only had mine a week or so. Probably best for others to speak on its durability record.

I purchased an xps gen 1 back in 2004 and recently had a very very bad spill which crushed the systems's LCD and virtually made it unrepairable. I did have complete care and get this, they are replacing it with a new xps gen 3 possibly a m1705. From what the dell rep explained is that they measure what you paid on the covered system and they will replace for equivalent value.
I paid nearly 4k on my gen 1 since i wanted all the bells and whistles (m18/9800) and p4-3.4 extreme.
That policy is situational, but i highly recommend it . I plan on renewing my complete care when I get the new lappie.

Spend the money on the in-home service and accidental coverage. You won't have to mail your laptop back for repair (takes time), and it will be fixed in days even if you drop it.

I never buy extended warrenty but I know a few people that it has paid off to buy yhe warrenty -
Look at it this way...you spend a few hundred dollars on house insurance to insure your 200k house or you spend a couple hundred to insure your 20k car. Do you really want to spend a couple hundred on something that only costs 1-2k?
I have never bought an extended warranty on anything. Never had any problems. -
Get the extended warranty and also complete care. IT IS WORTH IT, I can tell you. Your 2k system might fall down and you should protect your investment. I got it because I know I can drop it anyday, lol....

You could drop it I hope you mean. We need to be sure and keep Dell in business by legitably filing claims with them. My stock in Dell is dropping because of folks that CAN drop their notebooks.

Lets make this easy...
1. No Extended Warranty purchased -- Something goes funky with your system - you end up mailing it to the Rapid Rsponse Depot and miss your system for at least a week.
2. Extended Warranty Purchase (Onsite Service) -- A technician is dispatched to your location the next business day and the part is replaced.
Not a bad deal if you ask me. So it depends on how long you are willing to go without the use of your machine. -
I bought a Dell desktop about 3 years ago. Had the heatsink come unseated few months ago. Basically was a solder connection that broke away from the motherboard. I wasn't even sure if the pc was still under warranty. Dell had a tech come to my house, and he replaced the entire motherboard. Case in point of a warranty paying for itself, I guess.
I did get the 3 year warranty again with my 1705, mainly because of my experience with the desktop. I now wish I would have also bought the complete care. I've owned three laptops prior to this one and never had any kind of accident, but as I get older, I tend to get klutzier. -
Hey - thank you all for your insights, opinions and reasonings behind whether one should get or not get additional coverage and what type. I believe the extra few dollars for the added piece of mind is worth it afterall I'm getting this for someone else who's not too tech savvy. Thank you all again!

I complain alot. I need the warranty. By the time my warranty runs out, I'll probably would have call in enough times to have everything replaced on my E1705 except the serial number.
