Dell's New G Series Gaming Laptops

Waiting a couple of days w/o any post here, I figured I'd start one.

Dell just announce their new G3, G5, and G7 series of gaming laptops.

The G3 is to start out at $749, the G5, $799, and the G7, at $849.

The G3, G5, and G7 laptops have access to the Nvidia GTX 1050, the 1050 Ti, and the 1060 Max-Q GPUs, eighth-gen Intel processors (on up to the new 6 core i9 CPU in the G5 and G7), an optional 4K display in the G7, and a 17-inch version of the G3. The G5 and G7 even have Killer networking.

The Alienware's were also tweaked w/the 15" and the 17" models, bringing them up to date with eighth-generation processors, including the i7 and i9 CPU's, w/the i9 being said to be factory overclockable up to 5GHz.

The only one now available, is the 15" G7 model, w/the new 8th Generation i7-8750H Processor (6-Core, 9MB Cache, up to 3.9GHz w/ Turbo Boost), together w/the Nvidia GTX 1060 w/the Max Q Design technology, 6GB GDDR5 video memory, and supports 2666 MHz DDR4, up to 32GB. The rest will be officially released on the 16th of this month.

Here I just received my 7577 just last week. I'm tempted to send it back and order the 15" G7, w/the i9, when it becomes available on the G7 model.

It looks like the G5 is basically a specs update of the Inspiron 15 7577. And the G7 appears pretty much identical to the G5, except it offers the i9-8950HK. I wonder how it differs internally, if at all, to warrant that.

On page 15, it shows the G7 (7588) supporting Intel's Optane memory.

I will be jealous of the better clock speeds but that chassis can still only dissipate approximately 45 watts of power before saturating and cooking. I think burst tasks will see a nice improvement but full-tilt gaming will still be dependent on the power curve of the CPU and how well it undervolts.

The optane point is moot to me. Battery life will almost certainly be better with lower base clock and higher peak clock speeds.

 

Well, I went and ordered an Alienware 15 R3 laptop today instead of going w/the G7, for about what I paid for my 7577, thanks to Dell's on going sales, and the corporate discount I got. I also got an additional $100 discount, thanks to my being a loyal customer. This is my forth Alienware which I have purchased.

As much as I would of liked going with the R4 w/the i7-8570H cpu, I had to draw the line at a maximum price which I was willing to go. Outside of the cpu, they appear to be identical systems.

The only option I went for, outside of the i7-7700HQ cpu, was going w/the FHD (1920x1080), 120Hz, TN+WVA, Anti-Glare, 400-nits, NVIDIA G-SYNC Enabled, Non-touch display. Hopefully, I won't be disappointed. Outside of that, it comes w/16 GB (2x8) DDR4 (2400 MHz) memory, the GeForce 1060 w/6 GB DDR5 memory, a 1 TB 7200 rpm HD, the Killer 1435 WiFi, and Windows 10 Home.

I would of liked to go w/Win 10 Pro, the faster 2666 MHz memory, and the bigger 99 Wh battery, but I had to draw a line, taking into account that all these could be easily upgraded later.

I have a Samsung 960 EVO 250 GB M.2 NVMe SSD, so I didn't need to buy another SSD w/the laptop.

The Alienware 15 also comes w/two full-size M.2 PCIe/SATA slots, and one half-size M.2 PCIe/SATA drive, while the 7577/G7 comes w/just one full-size.

When it comes to the Wi Fi, the only difference I could see between the Killer 1435 and the 1535, is that the latter comes w/Bluetooth 5.0 vs. 4.1. I don't use Bluetooth anyway, and I normally have it shut off in the Device Manager, so the $25 cost difference wasn't worth it. If I should ever need to upgrade the 1435, I can easily upgrade it.

One thing I like w/the Alienware laptops, vs. the 7577/G7, is the Alienware Graphics Amplifier, which can be used w/them thanks due to their proprietary external graphics port. I can only "assume" at this point, the same w/the 7577/G7, w/their Thunderbolt 3.0 connector, that the Razer Core V2 Thunderbolt 3 external graphics enclosure, or something similar, could be used.

I can only assume that the Razer would work on the 7577/G7, w/their Thunderbolt 3.0 connectors, but w/o trying it, nor reading anything about someone having tried it, I can't confirm it.

I also snagged the r3 from the outlet 7700hq, 16ram, 1 tb hdd for $932 with discounts. The upgrade cost to the r4 is outrageous and I don't feel to spend 1200 extra.

 

Is this a Alienware thread or about the new G series laptops?
I’m done buying AW due to there very poor cooling and uneven CPU core temps being out of whack due to the crappy tripod heat sink design, maybe the new models fixed the issues but screw them ,I’m not dropping another $2000+ for a maybe fix , it has to run like a $2000 laptop not some piece of junk that you have to work over and fix yourself.

Now the new G-Series from Dell is more inline of you get what you pay for, I’m not crazy about the design but the new color scheme with blue instead of red is so much better looking ( words cannot describe how happy I am about them getting rid of the red illuminated keyboard ) I’ve come to the conclusion that buying a cheaper model that’s good enough every couple of years is a better fit than buying a very expensive laptop and hoping everything works as it should.( with discounts and sales I’ve had the older models with GTX 1060 MQ -i7,16 GB Ram in my cart for under $800, yes the red trim and keyboard stopped me from ordering I hated it that much...lol)

I’m still waiting for reviews on all the models G3,G5 and G7,the one thing I want is a good 1080P screen that bright and doesn’t looked washed out.

The G3 should go on sale April 16, personally that’s the model in my eyes that looks better than the G5,( better meaning the form factor not build materials) just not sure how build quality is between models or if one is louder or runs cooler than the other.

 

The G3 is now officially available, while the G5 has a site, but w/no actual product posted yet.

 

So it seems like the G3 and G5 have the fingerprint reader, but not the G7? That makes no sense.

 

I don't see a fingerprint reader listed for any of the models.

 

It's in the product details section, not in the configurations/tech specs. The fingerprint reader is mentioned for the G3 and G5, but not the G7.

There still no review on new G7, the keyboard is it the same ? I read the Inspiron gaming 7000 has a bad keyboard for typing.

 

I love my 7577's keyboard. I've seen it rated pretty well in reviews actually. Very studry.

 

No touchscreen options on any of the new G series, it looks like. None of the configurations available now make any mention.

 

I got mixed feelings about touchscreens on laptops, sure it makes things easier to use but at the cost of having fingerprints all over the screen but if it has a good enough touchpad not really needed.

 

Some people already received their G7, but there are still no G5 configurations on Dell's website. I guess they're waiting to get rid of 7577 stock.
I was looking to get the G5 or G7, but I'm going to wait to see how the new HP Pavilion Gaming laptop will be as well. It's very similarly spec'd and priced as Dell's G series. It has smaller bezels resulting in a smaller footprint, which I really like.

 

I wonder why 3 model for Gaming series and they spot mostly the same hardware?

So far it looks the G3 is the really new model, the G5 the successor for Inspiron 7559 / 5577, while the G7 for the Inspiron 7567 / 7577. Do I think that right?

When to expect these with 2060maxQ graphics?

 

Is gonna be 1160 Max-Q and if we are lucky, this fall...

 

Is the screen the same as the last model?
Looks a bit washed out but could just be the angle or camera.

 

I wish we could get some real numbers on the desktop GTX 1180 performance soon. If it blows away the 1080 like the 1080 did to the 980, then that should translate well to laptop GPUs and I will wait before buying.

 

I chatted with a dell rep earlier today... the screen in the G7 is 'similar' to the screen in the 7577. 220nits, IPS, FHD. they wouldn't confirm it was the same panel though. They likely have multiple suppliers anyway. I really wish they would at least run a 250nit screen on a 1000+ computer.

 

If that's the case, it'll be a no buy for me. The 7577 FHD had a pretty poor color gamut, even compared with my 2011 mid range laptop.

I purchased this screen from Amazon and whenever I buy a new Dell laptop, I change it for. It can do 100hz and gives awesome picture.

 

That is will be awesome! I just checked the current version 1060maxQ can do 12.000 3DMark11 score, so the 1160maxQ maybe will hit over 15.000 points. Finally we are at the point, where even a low budget PC gives plenty of GPU power.

 

I think that's pretty pessimistic. The 1060 Max-Q outperforms the previous top end 980M. Let's hope for something like that this year. The possibility of a GTX 1160 laptop performing similarly to today's 1080 laptops has me salivating.

 

That is extremely disappointing if true, the one glaring weak point on the last model was the crappy 1080P screen , I'm sure people interested in this laptop would gladly pay more if they offered a decent 300nit screen.
I know they have to cut corners to offer it at a cheap price but one thing you don't skimp on is a halfway decent screen.
Boo......Dell if true, I'll take my business elsewhere.

 

15" G3 series is out with GTX 1060MQ.
Wonder how the thinner chassis will handle the hardware, hopefully it at least is not too loud.

Did you install the AU Optronics B156HAN01.2 panel into your 7588 yet? I was wondering if the B156HAN01.2 is an upgrade over the factory.

 

Have a 7588 on order. I was wondering if it is possible to swap a larger battery such as the 7577 6cell 74whr one. Thanks in advance.

 

Probably not unless there is space for it and from what I remember the current battery is already a tight fit.

No hands on of the 17inch G3 ? I cannot find any info anywhere other then a couple small videos on YT.

Id like to see the cooling solution and some real world numbers on it.

The first thing is the temps especially the CPU . I guess everyone is curios about that aspect because the only vents are on the bottom from what we have seen of it so air is coming in but has nowhere to exhaust.

Also general build quality IE if it feels cheap and flimsy with keyboard flex stuff like that.

The AUO is definitely the better display and it's completely luck of the draw. Roughly 52% vs 72% sRGB and the AUO will OC to 100Hz vs a whopping 64Hz.

Anyone have any idea on how the 4K UHD panel is? Worth the extra $200 compared to getting the poor LG 1080p?
