Can someone step me through Dell's Vostro Exchange process?

I have a Vostro 1400 (received last week). There are 2 things that makes the laptop less than perfect for me:

    1. A low humming noise from the machine
    2. The screen flickers

    Some additional questions:
    1. Can I request for a system exchange (ie a new one) or will Dell attempt to fix my problems?
    2. If I get a system exchange, will it be brand new or a refurb one?
    3. Will I have to send my existing unit back now or only after I received the new one?

Thank you in advance for your advise.

I have learn alot from this great forum.

it depends if you have a warranty or not (you should have at least 1 year).

if so, call Dell w/ the problem. They will try to troubleshoot it over the phone, and if they determine it can't be fixed, they will send you a new one.

at least that's what i was told...

It also depends on when you purchased the laptop. I just received a replacement Vostro 1400 yesterday for LCD issues. I have a Samsung screen, but they sent me an even worse AUO screen. Anyway, I was within 21 days of ordering with a 1 year limited warranty, and so they build me a whole new PC brand new. The new PC was shipped, and I'm supposed to ship back my old PC in the box it came in. I'm going to be shipping back the new one though as it's even worse.
