Went to get return authorization for a notebook from Dell--well within the 21-day return window--and was told that my local state requires that Dell charge me a restocking fee of 15%!
I told the rep that there was no way the state could be involved in a restocking fee for Dell's merchandise. He insisted this was the case.
I told him I wanted to speak to his supervisor.
He put me on hold and came back to say that the restocking fee was being waived.
Was this a blatant ripoff attempt? If so, who was authorizing the tactic?

Most big company do this -
This is not about a restocking fee. It's about Dell claiming that the state in which I live imposes a restocking fee. That's absurd! -
I think the 15% restock is Dell's policy, not sure if its now. Look on their website for published policies. Last I knew it was 30% and no restock. I think this stinks given the direct order model that Dell has. They waived my restocking on the two D620's I ordered, but it was a very painful process....

Within the 21-day inspection period, there should be no restocking fee.

Restocking Fees: Unless the product is defective or the return is a direct result of a Dell error, a restocking fee of 15% may be charged on hardware, accessories, peripherals, parts and unopened software still in its/their sealed package, and on software that has not been downloaded if the software is delivered electronically. -
Dell's new restocking policy???
