This is awesome new line. I am thinking of getting the XPS 600 or the 200 to replace my XPS Gen2 desktop. The fans are extremely quiet now with their newly designed cases. I heard the rumor that the XPS M170 has a newer LCD with increase font size so you don't need glasses to read anymore. Still offer same insane resolution but just better and much sharper.

To those who like to bash Dell, I bet you are thinking darn it, these new XPS machines are nice :), but you know what, you are not allowed to buy them :). Go and buy an IBM and pay twice as much.

Let's hear it about the quality and whatever that is that you hate Dell so much. I bet you can't say much now with XPS line ehh :)

No disrespect intended. Just want to stand up for Dell and say that their machines, all of their lines, are the BEST. IBM and Fujitsu! Eat your hearts out.

Its the inspiron line that sucks so bad. Latitudes and XPS are the best built, and I'm sure the lexus line will follow in its foot steps. Not sure about the desktops.

Well, it doesn't suck, but it's not as good as the other two. And the XPS is being billed as a distinct set of computers. I don't think Dell sees it as an Inspiron, even though it's consumer oriented.

The new XPS M170 is really just an XPS2 plus a new gpu option, for an extra US$349, of the 7800 GTX rather than the base 6800 Ultra.

True, but in the future, there will be models that aren't based directly off of existing ones. The M140 for example will probably be a completely brand new model.

I just ordered an xps gen 2. last week. I was trying to get more info from DELL about the xps gen 2 vs. the Xps M170. They told me the only difference was the upgrade on the Video card to the NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7800 GTX, the BIOS, and the hinge cover, which is attached to the LCD. Then, I asked about the problem that some LCD's of the XPS2 have: "light leakage and sparkle effect". He said that they fixed the problem and that is why the xps was re-engineered and named XPSM170.....but I don't know if that was just crap he was making up......or what. Another representative told me they are the same thing just different name....and yet another one...."do not compare oranges to apples".....when I was trying to see if I could exchange my order of the xps gen 2 to the M170...what a jerk. So I do not know what a hell is going on....could you guys please educate me a little bit?

Going from the considerable technical info on the Dell web site, the M170 is a renamed XPS2 with another gpu option (the 7800). If you order an M170 with a 6800 Ultra the difference from the XPS2 is in the name. (all other options - cpu, HD, etc, being equal). Even the screen has identical technical specs. Dell has been incrementally improving the screens. Obviously, the M170 will reflect that time line.

I'm going to have to join in on this bashing.
I hate the Inspiron lines, and yes that includes the XPS.
and yes I have an inspiron 9100(xps gen1 without the flashy three letters)
The latitudes though, are a good deal. They are pretty durable for their price.

btw, what is this lexus line? a new gen xps? or are dell making cars now?

I pretty much agree with you SG. A few people I know have Inspirons, they are not doing so well with them...lately, I have noticed that the hard drives have been going on dells. Even on the Latitudes we have at work.

We had one go through 5 hard drives before they finally sent us a new laptop. Currently, we are having problems with the D610 series. The Dimension desktops are starting to fail as well. I know a guy who was so ticked off with his Dell, he threw it in the trash - it was still under warranty - that's how ticked off he was. And it was top of the line. Unbelievable. My neighbor's hard drive just went on her Dell too.

Maybe Dell is having some quality control issues...I can understand how people are getting upset.

Your best bet is a Latitude, XPS is basically an Inspiron with a fancy casing. But better quality nontheless. ;)

I've owned six Inspirons: 3500, 5000, (2) 8200, and (2) 8600. I have to say that the build quality of the 8200 line was the best. As of today, the only Dell notebook I would buy is the Precision M70.
