Ok i know this has been discussed on the forums so many times, but every so often i see someone say dell has ddr2 ram on their 8600gts and some say it has ddr3. The dell website doesnt help much either (look at screenshots below)
On the first page of dell for the 1520 laptops i see this:

and when i click to customize i get this

Contradicting it seems...we'll just have to find out from somebody who actually HAS a new Inspiron.
-
from what i've read several people have talked to dell's customer srevide and have confirmed it to be ddr3
-
Australian version is DDR2
Anyone know about the performance difference between 256MB DDR2/3 ? -
it might depend on the country as in the UK its DDR2
-
In Belgium it says DDR2 on every page, no contradictions here.
-
on tuesday i think i will know
-
Well then u better make a post about it on the main forum page. Make sure the title is in ALL CAPS and then post 20 pictures of the same screen shot from diffrent angles.

The Specifications page on the US site lists them as DDR2.
EDIT
I really hate forums that don't properly support the IMG tag.Attached Files:

My 2 cents..
1. I think the DDR2 and DDR3 are referring to two different things, and dependent on which video card you get. Like for example, the 22.4 bandwidth on the 8600GT means it's DDR3 even though it doesn't say (or so I've heard, I do not know this for sure).
2. The Dell reps are very confused and have no idea what they're talking about most of the times. Obviously. They might be confusing the RAM memory with the video card memory?
3. I doubt it would only be available to certain countries. That wouldn't make sense, if the technology is available, and everything else is the same, why wouldn't we get the same one?
4. Maybe the DDR2/3 is just a typo on the site.
5. The Dell reps are confused.
6. Hawt pink laptop for me very soon!!! -
when i talked to them, they said the video card was ddr3, so lets hope the rep was right

It's neither ddr2 or ddr3 but GDDR3! There's a difference..

And as far as I know, we haven't used GDDR2 since the 5 or 6 geforce series. So it doesn't make any sense to use it now on the 8 series. Besides GDDR3 is better in terms of heat and lower voltage requirement, makes perfect sense for laptop. Again it doesn't make any sense with this GDDR2/GDDR3 speculation. It has to be GDDR3 otherwise we are going backwards in term of technological advancement. -

@syne_24....you are not informed! a lot of notebooks with the 8600M GT uses GDDR2! for example the Zepto notebooks!
-
The fact is if Dell comes out with an underclocked 8600m GT, they'll have a lot of **** on their hands for false advertisement. 22.4GB/s is the listed bandwidth, and if it's not that, then it's wrong.

You should probably expect it to be underclocked. Dell underclocked the 6800go in the 9300 from 325/400 to 250/350, and they also underclocked the 7800go in the e1705 from 400/550 to 250/344. I don't know if the 7900GS was underclocked also but I would suspect so being that the popular 7900GSX mod does a pretty heavy overclock.
-
You can easily overclock it though right? Through nvidia's software?
-
What if it's GDDR2 and GDDR3 clocked at the same speeds? It really doesn't matter (aside from a slight power consumption difference) if they're clocked at the same speeds. Your memory bandwidth will be the same.
-
Yeah, either way the card is really good...
I highly doubt they would release different cards, the technology is available worldwide. Probably just a misunderstanding somewhere, I bet everyone will have either DDR2 or DDR3. We'll have to wait and see. -
-> Removed.. I was confused with the desktop version of the cards.
-
i heard somewhere that the inspirons 1520 came with a GDDR2 gpu and that the inspirons 1720 came with the GDDR3 version, i think if it was true, it would be cuz battery consumption and stuff
-
Nope, both the 1520 and 1720 come with the DDR2 version of the 8600M GT.
-
It's DDR2.
I will confirm when mine comes too, even though I already got the $100 from DELL for it.
Hopefully mine will arrive this week (Dell's warehouse is in Reno NV, I'm in Las Vegas, but they are SLOOOOOOOW) seeing as it's been sitting in a warehouse for 3 days now in the same state as me. I could have driven up there to get it already lol. -
I will also confirm when mine comes in this week tuesday or wednesday
(maybe Monday would be awesome!!!)
(I haven't seen anyone posting the 1720 as ddr2 or ddr3 yet)
Dell- DDR2 OR DDR3 8600gt??
