Dell... Always doing compromise

Hi,

I have a good gaming laptop for now (2016), but with the upcoming games and the fact that softwares are becoming more and more powerful, I was curious about what I could get in the coming years and as I see, Dell is always making weird decision with their hardware (Desktop and laptop).

What I mean is :

- G series and Alienware are powerful, but ugly.
- XPS, very expensive and not even a numeric keyboard which is very useful as shortcut in softwares or games.
- Inspiron, the only good Inspiron with Nvidia graphic card only have 500Gb HHD storage which is stupid. In 2020 we should all have at least 1Tb.
- Inspiron desktop, just useless
- XPS desktop, bulky and expensive.
- Desktop monitor, I can't fit 20" screen on my desk (I have a desk with lot of blocks containing books, etc.). Bellow 20" you don't even get 1080p.
- Desktop in general is full of wires everywhere and it's why I prefer laptop.

I think Dell should make things in the 2020 standard like :
- Office version (integrated graphic card - Not powerful - 500Gb to 1Tb HDD - Core i3 or i5 - 1080p)
- Professional and gaming (Nvidia and Radeon, 1Tb SSD, Core i5 or i7, 1080p or 4K, true color)

I just feel like Dell is making hardware just randomly...

Not just dell doing what you state.

 

As pointed out by KoJack, many OEMs are doing the same thing.
Look at how much others are juicing on designs... just because of popularity over 1 version of the product.

However, being a brand follower, it's nice to see that a brand fan points on the current, and future products... where imperfections can be foreseeable.

 

As it was stated, other OEM's do this extensively.
I have a major issue with OEM's designing laptops with relatively low baseline specs, and, if you can customize the design with more powerful stuff, they will charge you at least 50% more compared to what you could get on your own, and then they turn around and charge quite a lot on the base design too.

Dell has a bad track record with cooling for one thing.
Their new 'standard' for CPU operating temps seem to be 100 degrees C... which is ridiculous.

They are too lazy when it comes in designing proper cooling, never-mind installing decent storage and RAM or screens (mobile phones get better treatment than that... and WHAT is it with sticking with 720p camera on the top of the display? A high quality 1080p cam is relatively cheap).

 

Because most people use their laptop camera for video conferencing where 720 is more than enough where as most people use their selfie camera for high res photos.

 

720p is not really enough.
Not by a long shot.
When you're actually conversing with people using the laptop screen webcam, you can see just how low quality it actually is (I've used mine on the Predator Helios 500 PH517-61 with Ryzen 2700 and V56 for a Zoom conference recently, and to be honest, the webcam video quality is really low compared to my Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Plus smartphone (roughly 2 years old - the model itself is 3 years old) has for a selfie camera (1080p).

 

I don’t know if they will announce new laptop soon, but the ones they released since I created this post.

I don’t understand why Dell continue to sell mostly laptop with 512 Gb storage when the norm is 1 Tb.

I’m looking for a laptop to run Flight Simulator and do some video/photo editing. Other than the gaming laptop which are ugly, there isn’t much choice. Oh, also the Inspiron still have bad color precision. The XPS very expensive for a limited storage.

You buy an XPS and install a bigger drive, it takes 30 mins including OS install. My system came with 500gb HDD, I installed a 1 tb SSD in it for 99 bucks.
