    Hello,

I got my inspiron 1520 a week ago and I upgraded to 3 years complete care. Now dell.ca offers the complete care PLUS lojack anti theft bundle for the same prince... can I call dell and tell them that I want one too? otherwise, can I just tell them I want to return it and order a new one since I had the laptop for less than a month?

    thanks

Lojack works "In Theory", however practical application dictates otherwise.

Our company had 6 (that I know of) laptops stolen and we got NONE returned via Computrace.

Waste of money and time. Spend an extra $5 on your home insurance and ask for a $0 deductible on your laptop.

It works in theory but canadian law doesnt help.* Say you get it traced...You would have to get police and a warrant which means you need very compelling grounds.* The price of the laptop precludes the importance in which a warrant might be considered. It is probable that the trace signal alone is not enough for a warrant as there is then a time delay between getting proof of location, proving that to a JP and then geting it to the JP soon enough for a warrant to be legally effected.

Either way... If it is a free upgrade then why not? He already has the 3 year warranty so I think he should harp to Dell for it, not to mention the complete care...

I got the LoJack with my warranty (and complete care)... I didn't buy the warranty for LoJack it was mainly for the complete care since it was only $84 more...

How effective is LoJack? Who knows *shrugs... I used my DPA so if the laptop is stolen they'll give me my money back and LoJack will give me $99 for their software... For free worth a shot ;)

I would suggest, rather, he contact Dell and get the equalled warranty ensured (which can be done after the system is received [they simply anotate your file]) and negotiate a price reduction because of the lojack and have a credit applied to the account.

If he can get that too then that works... Whichever option is good ;). As I was only saying LoJack is an ok FREE addon... I'm not convinced I'd actually pay $100 for it... Though I'm shocked at how resiliant it is on my 1520. I've replaced my HD and went from Vista 32 to Vista 64 and it is still phoning home :D

That's unfortunate. Any word on US procedures with Lojack?

I'm under the impression it's not as great as say car Lojack, but I dunno, it sounds good. Might just go with insurance anyway.

LoJack doesn't replace insurance... More like it complements it...

I think if you are buying third party insurance (like SafeWare) you should get them on the line and see how much of a discount they can give you for having LoJack on the machine... Generally speaking, insurance companies will give you a discount as they see the policy as less risky than without it.

Spend the extra few bucks and get decent insurance. I pay an extra $5 a month (on top of my existing home/content insurance) to insure my laptop with a $0 deductible. If it gets stolen, I get it replaced without shelling out any more money.

If your complete care package already covers against theft, then I don’t see much of a point in getting Lo-Jack.

It’s a purely a software based system, no GPS tracking as in lo-Jack for auto mobiles. They use the IP address (if/when the thief connects to the internet from his home or office). But if he decides to format the HDD or replace it, Lo-Jack will be gone. Besides, they won’t even refund the price of the computer, if they can't recover it; just refund the software price, which makes it even more unattractive.

Unfortunately Complete Care does not cover theft

"CompleteCare service excludes theft, loss, and damage due to fire, flood or other acts of nature, or intentional damage. Customer may be required to return unit to Dell. For complete details, visit www.dell.com/servicecontracts"

I just formatted my comp and yet lojack is still detected on my computer. It doesn't get wiped out by simply reformatting. Now I haven't tried replacing hard drives but I believe M1330 has a bios feature specifcally made for lojack. I'm not sure what it does but I believe it's there for a purpose.

Thats impressive. You replaced your HD AND reinstalled your OS, and Lojack remained?
