Hey NBR, I just found an amazing deal for an Inspiron 1420 for a grand total of 970ish dollars after taxes, which, after taxes and currency exchange, would cost me a mere 10 dollars more than my current laptop, coupled with a huge performance increase (C2D @ 2.0Ghz, 2GB ram, 250GB HDD, Geforce 8400, etc...). Unfortunately, since I live in Canada, I'm pretty sure the American Dell website won't ship north of the border (if they somehow do, that'd be great, but that's probably wishful thinking).

That being said, I have relatives flying in from the USA in the next two weeks. My question is, if I order the laptop and ship it to their home address, would they have issues bringing the laptop back to Canada? Thanks in advance.

Nope, they shouldn't have much problems, granted if they only bring the opened laptop and maybe an accessory or two.

I think there are also warranty issues as well, Dell Canada may not honour the warranty and you have to ship it to your relatives to ship it to Dell.

Ah, thanks for bringing up that issue. I completely forgot to mention that in my OP.

Yea, as stated above they won't have problems as long as they bring the laptop in a case and with its accessories only (it looks like theirs not that they are giving it to a Canadian as that is taxable)...

Warranty issues won't exist as you can transfer to warranty between Dell US and Dell Canada and all would be honored and if you order the onsite 3 year warranty you don't have to even transfer it as it covers the US and Canada ;)

I don't plan on getting any extended warranty as I'm trying to keep the cost as low as possible (hence the reason I'm ordering from the states :p). I'm gonna call Dell tomorrow and see how the warranty service works between the countries, altough I'm beginning to think this is going to cause more trouble than what it's worth. (Gave both of you's rep for the help).

Naa it won't be more hassle than its worth... Just fill out the international tag transfer form when you get the laptop (or it ships even and you have the service tag) and it will be done... I know as I've done this with my old 5160 which I purchased on eBay in Canada so I had to transfer the warranty to myself and then I transfered it to the US when I moved back down here like 4 months later.

As I mentioned earlier the only perk to the extended warranty is you don't have to do the tag transfer, but it is so simple to do. Just fill out that form and give them a few days and it will be done ;)

apparently if one gets a 3+ yrs complete cover, it is transferred directly to ones home country.. atleast so for canada.. but is it applicable for other countries?

i'm in india and planning to get the m1530, what with the great deals they are out with, from the US site (via a friend there). So if i take a 3+ years ccover, will i be able to obtain complete cover in india?? I have been trying to figure this out for a couple of days now, but end up with contradictory results! Please help!! i need to figure this and order in teh next week to avail of the offers at the US site.. thanks! :)

Ive been very familiar with these warranty concerns for quite awhile. You cannot transfer the warranty unless you buy a NBD warranty and move after the fact and, even then, they will not guarantee that they will allow it. Dell Canada and Dell USA are very proactive on keeping one another in line (no cross border shopping).

If you buy through the relative and then bring it back...pay the GST and, even then, they may just tell you to go depending on how long you were over.

If you require warranty, you have to send it back to your relative and they send it out. The system has to be registered at that address under that name from the address. Then once fixed, they can send it back to you with no problems.

Hint Hint!!! Try and call Dell Canada tomorrow and tell them about the great US deal and state how the dollar is even now so Canadians shouldnt be shunned... you may be surprised.

    thanks fuzzy and flamenko!

i guess the complete cover policy is totally rigid... but warranty might jus be transferred with much lesser hassles than expected... the friend said he'd called dell, there might jus be a way, though right now i dont know details... thanks everyone :)
