After 3 or 4 wrong notebooks, Dell has finally built me the right replacement laptop for my original defective laptop. I got the CPU upgraded to a core 2 duo t7200, an updated battery, and an updated Hard Drive. I checked online on the status of my new replacement coming, and this one is coming with a 120Gb 5400rpm HDD. The one i have now on the wrong replacement is a 80GB 7200rpm. I am just wondering which of these would be better performance wise. Storage doesnt matter that much as i have a 400GB external HDD. thanks in advance for any help

the 5400 will be fine, at that size you will be hard pressed to notice any performance difference at all

    The 7200RPM will be faster.

7200RPM would definitely be faster. I personally would keep the 7200RPM drive, but it's more of a personal preference.

As seen in the benchmark results the power consumption in 7200rpm compared with 5400rpm is double. In this case I'm quite happy with my 120GB 5400 rpm.

That is only a myth...read the stick on this in the hardware forum. I haven't read the article, but I'm sure there are other things that skew this test.

the noticiable performance differences between notebook and laptop is the hdd. everything is the same: cpu, ram are all used magnetism communication, except for the hdd: the rotation speed determines the speed of the drive, and 7200 = 1.33 * 5400, which is 33% faster!

but 33% faster does not necessarily mean 33% more energy consumption.

I vote for 120Gb, cause i donwload a lot of things from the internet. 7200 RPM doens't make much difference, only when it comes to games . I accept the fact that 7200RPM is faster in speed in data transfer.

You are not taking into account that the slower spinning drive has 50% more data stored onto the same size platters. This will not equal the playing field and the 7200 RPM drive will still be faster, but not 33% faster. If both drives were 80GB drives your equation would be closer.

true, however in this case we have 80gb and 120gb. the 120gb will have more data on 1 side and therefore will take more time for the disk header to seek for the desired piece of data. with the slower rotation speed, it will take even longer for a 5400rpm drive if it were 80gb.

my taste is that i want to maximize the speed of the laptop, while the data storage can be solved by desktop hdd, which has more cache and much more capacity. why you want to store your persistent data on your lappy (and make it slower when processing) while you can store it on a pretty much cheaper 400gb desktop hdd? outpost just had it for $100. for me, lappy = speed, storage = external hdd :)

the first one, the case was not put together sorta. the side where the black and silver meet was coming apart. Then for the replacements, i got like 2 or 3 where they didnt have right specs, so kept on calling them

Well price wise the 7200RPM is more expensive so ... and I have a 7200 RPM its faster load times.

Can anyone confirm temps of a M1210 running Vista RC2? I just got my new laptop today and installed vista RC2 on it cause it worked perfectly on my other laptop. Everything is working very well except the Temps. Just by playing WOW on maximum setting for 10 minutes, the cpu went to 70c and GPU went to 73c. My old laptop never went above 65c. Is this normal operating temp? My specs are:

    2.0 Core 2 duo t7200
    geforce 7400 go
    80gb 7200rpm
    2gb ram

any help would be appreciated. hope its just vista making my temps high

also, i just used the cd drive and it sounds like a hacksaw... only when reading cds though...
