    Hi...

I ordered a D630 a couple of days ago, and apparently my computer is already built as I just got a tracking number for the shipment. When I go to FedEx to check that number, it says that the starting point is in Reno?? I had no idea Dells were made here in the US, I thought they would have been made overseas in China or someplace like that?? (I live in Colorado)

I live in Nashville and there is a huge Dell plant right next to our airport, so I dunno...

mine is coming from the TN plant, and my dad's came from TX.
They probably customize in the US, but the rest is foreign.

I don't think that's quite right. The chassis are shipped to the US and then they, with the rest of the ordered parts are assembled and completed here. I don't think Dell builds any of its chassis, though, if I'm wrong, it isn't the first time. :D

Dell buys the chassis (case and motherboard) from an ODM such as Asus, Compal, Quanta, etc. and they add the cpu, ram, hard drive, screen, battery, keyboard, etc. at their own factories. The Dell factories are all over the world... Asia, Europe, USA. (Mine was assembled in Malaysia.) Even if it's shipping from Reno, it may have just been flown there from a Dell factory overseas. Or it may have been assembled in Reno. I don't know whether they assemble systems in Reno or not, but if it appeared there that fast, then maybe.

Chassis are built in maylasia and final assembly is done usually in Tenn. don't know why it would come from Reno, there isn't a dell manufact facility there.

While I don't work for Dell, I am well versed in this:

All home items are made in Asia, and shipped via a private freight 747 to Nashville. The items are on pallets, not boxes - they are boxed with the manuals, etc. in Nashville and wrapped with DHL, FedEx, UPS, or whatever. Things like servers and XPS units are made in Texas, because people pay a premium they give them the first class everything.

Here's a screenshot of the FedEx tracking page...(certain details blurred for obvious reason!)...

Dell ships computers from China or Malaysia to Nashville on a pallet. That pallet then travels to your local hub in which it is broken open and all of the individual package labels are scanned into the system. Which hub these pallets are sent to vary depending on where most of the packages are going. If there were 500 computers all destined to go to colorado that day it could have very easily been sent to fedex's local hub at DIA here.. however more than likely most of the computers on that pallet were going to california or such.

Well, the FedEx guy just came by and dropped it off...theres a sticker on the box that says "Computer made in Malaysia"...mystery solved it seems for the most part, though the logistics of that still intrigued me somewhat...someone said that Dell computers are shipped from Asia to Nashville via 747...being an aviation dork, I looked into that a little bit and verified that China Airlines Cargo has a flight to Nashville with a 747-400F on a regular basis...but if my package, for FedEx's purposes, started in Reno, how did it get from Nashville to Reno? The logistics of the whole operation are very interesting to me...

LOL I kind of doubt that your machine went through Nashville, but I'm sure some do.

You sure about that? That'd be an awfully big factory right across the street. ;)

Interesting information, indeed. And I remember seeing somewhere that Dell's chassis manufacturer was Quanta. I think the date was last summer, though, so that may have since changed.

I know Asus builds some of them (the M1330 I think, maybe other models too). I think they use different ODMs for different products.
