Hey, I purchase My XPS M1330 about 28 days ago. I recently heard about all the delays and how some people haven gotten theirs 2 1/2 months after they ordered theirs. I can't wait that long, so I am thinking about canceling and ordering another Vaio, specifically the SZ6 Model. My question is do you think that I need to configure the computer with a more frugal set of parts, eg 2 GB ram, than what I ordered for MY XPS m1330. I got caught up in the moment then, I dont want to me next time. I use the computer for Office tasks and some light gaming.
Here are the Specs for the dell I ordered:
XPS m1330
Tuxedo Black | WLED | C2D T7500 | 200 GB 7200 RPM HD | 4GB RAM | Nvidia 8400m gs | Bluetooth | AGN wireless |
Ordered 8/5 for 4,300 USD After 10% Off: Still not here.
-
for what your saying you are going to be using it for. I think $4,300 is a huge amount of money. Its not even a gaming lappy. I would cancel.
I think you could get away with spending 1400 on the high side.. to make you have some gaming room. Just office tasks 600-1000 tops -
wow 4300 dollars for that?
-
Yup... Thats with Tax and the 10% off. Apparently it's the higest configuration I could get.
-
Oh my dear lord. Your got ravaged by Dell. There is no way you should have paid that amount, much less with 10% off.
-
Really.. I bought it online. I maxed out everything they had. Everything. I wanted the fastest 13.3 lappy in the world. I though this was my chance. I think the price was steep but fair.
-
I would buy less computer personally.
There is no laptop worth that much IMHO.
Although it is better than this I guess...
-
I maxed out all of the specifications, aside from buying random accessories and it only came to ~$3700. That was with an extended warranty, all your specs, Microsoft Office 2007 Pro, anti-virus protection, theft protection, and all the bells and whistles.
-
That didnt include tax though which was pretty high:
I didnt get office or antivirus either-- wonder why mine was so expensive!!
Product Subtotal: $3,977.10
Shipping and Handling: $0.00 (Later ugraded gratis to next-day
Tax: $324.72
Product Total: $4,301.82
EDIT: I got 2 Nine cell Batteries, Cingular HSDPA Card, Extra Power Adapter, and TV Tuner -
this is really insane if u want a good laptop for gaming get an alienware or something this is way overboard in my opinion
-
+1 -
I just maxed one out on the EPP site with a 3 yr complete care warranty, security suite and everything you listed and it added up to 3263 including tax.
I imagine it's more on the Dell home site. At the very least, you should buy the ram from someone other than Dell and save a few hundred.
That's a crazy, much too high price for this laptop. -
you maybe have the fastest laptop of the world but you stay with a 128MB video card ... I know you had no choise with the xps 13'' ... but for 4300$ ...
-
$4300 bucks?? That's obscene. Dell took you for a ride, man! You can get a decked out Clevo m570RU through XoticPC.com or Powernotebooks.com for a whole lot less, and that's with a C2d T7700 2.4 GHz, WUXGA screen & 7950GTX or 8700M GT card. Before you allow yourself to be ravaged by Dell, look at what Sager, Compal, and Asus has to offer.
-
Same system on Dell Home, 3 years complete care, free messenger bag and antivirus and it's 3771 with tax.
Cancel your order! -
Allright, I'll take your advise. But can you recommend a 13.3 Laptop With more power than the one I allready bought thats less than five pounds.
EDIT: Everyone keeps giving me heir prices for their comps. But are you inlcuding TAx. That adds another 40o bucks. -
I included tax on both. Below is Dell Home.
Sub Total $3,790.00
Total Discounts -$265.30
Sub Total $3,524.70
Shipping & Handling $24.98
Shipping Discount -$24.98
Tax $246.72
State Environmental Fee
More Info --
Total $3,771.42
Exact same configuration on the Dell EPP site including tax is $3263. -
No this is the most powerful laptop...You just need to know how to fix things... Cancel the order and order without the 4Gb ram. Buy it at Fryes or discounted. It is the simplest thing to change that yourself in this system.
In fact, you can probably do that with the hard drive as well if you wanted to. Heck, you could throw a 64GB ssd or 32GB ssd and 32Gb SSD card in there for that.
Next DONT BUY ONLINE!!!!!! You are the person Dell sales Reps are dying to get. Follow my buying guide below and then come back to brag!!! Telephone your order in and walk through every upgrade asking "Whats the best price you can give me on that upgrade?" At the end ask if they can throw the best warranty in gratis as you bought so many upgrades?? -
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
I think it's also reasonable to say that you could try reconfiguring the thing online; seeing as everyone else is getting a significantly lower price chances are your build of 4.3k was probably a fluke due to Dell's admittedly erratic pricing system. If you end up with the same price then yeah, go find it offline.
-
-
Yeah, how did you come up to 4300? I just did the same thing for about 3000.
-
I presume he ordered things like Office 2007 Pro for ~$400...
-
You Know what, I really didnt. I didnt order any software. I think I am gonna cancel. Your right, I thought that want a bad price. but seeing you all got the same lappy for a better price, i just dont understand it.
-
first, improve your spelling and grammar.
second, for what you need, that IS WAY TOO MUCH. how could you possibly pay that much for office tasks and light gaming?
third, if you wanted the FASTEST, you should've went with the SSD drive.
the 32GB SSD is faster than 200GB 7200rpm HDD. -
Stop criticizing him! He came here for help and doesnt need that kind of crap from you really...
Chipman....lets do this first.. Cancel that order. I will walk you through everything to make sure you save tons ok?
Next, before I start with you I want you to read my How-to below. -
-
And They Are Owned By Guess Who??? Dell
-
In regard to xdz3r0's statement, I give you my most humble apology for my truly despicable and wholly unsatisfactory spelling and grammar. I shall strive for the rest of my humble existence to improve my writing skills. Please, allow me to thank you for bringing these unacceptable mistakes to my attention.
Flamenko, i appreciate your help. However, do you think that it might be possible to negotiate with a Dell CSR to lower the price without canceling the order and loosing my spot in line. As it stands now, I would get my computer right in the nic of time for school. Those are my concerns, and I hope you can spread some light on the predicament.
Again, forgive my grammar. I am still learning the language. -

If you dont mind me asking, why do you need the fastest 13.3 notebook in the world? By maxing out the configuration you are only gaining a marginal performance difference while losing lot of money. Personally I wouldnt get anything better than this:
T7300 2.0GHz processor
LED Display with VGA cam
2GB Dual channel
160GB 7200RPM HDD
DVDRW
Standard components like Wifi, Bluetooth and Fingerprint scanner
3 year complete
All of that comes to around $2500 after 10% off + tax.
200Mhz difference of T500 2.2GHz processor is not noticeable at all, youll be running at half that speed most of the time for non CPU intensive apps (office work and music, video etc.). 2GB of RAM is enough for most tasks, but if you really want 4GB, then it is cheaper to buy after market (around $250 for 2x2GB, you can also sell your 2x1GB on eBay to save up even more). Besides, Vista 32bit wont be able to access all 4GB, more like 3~3.5GB, therefore 4GB is a waste unless you are planning to use Vista 64bit. As some others have pointed out, for office work and light gaming thats an overkill.
If you configure it sensibly, you can still end up with a very powerful machine but for a much lower price. -
To Phoenix...because some of us just have to have it...
Chipman... No I dont think you can negotiate down a grand but you can try. It doesnt hurt.
They can give you credit back on your credit card without affecting your order. I would call and try and say your really upset after seeing so many get deals and you got stiffed through lack of knowledge. That may help.
If it doesnt...cancel and reorder. -
Chipman, Take Flamenko's advice. I wish I knew of this forum and Flamenko's guide before I ordered mine online. To late for me now. Consider the delay a good thing for you atm.
-
Tx l0x..repped and now your that much closer to the spatula/toaster oven combo...(lol)

lol! ty flamenko

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
My M1330 next year will be faster and get better battery life than than yours. Specs:
45nm Nehalem processor (brand new, better than current core 2 Duo's
Vista home Premium
WLED screen
1GB ram (to upgrade later)
Nvidia 9000 series graphics card
Wireless N
128GB SSD drive (hopefully cheap next year)
Bluetooth 3.0 (uses less power over current version, operates at higher GHz for less interuption with other devices)
Definitly not paying more than $2100 for this. -

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
1. Nehalem is supposed coming in Quater 3 of next year, which is only about a year away.
2. Sorry that I am excited. Just looking forward to replacing my almost 5 year old Inspiron. I have worked hard this summer doing my first ever job, and have saved up almost $1000. I hope to get a job for weekends during the school year to earn more money. -
Yeah, that's way too much money.
No one needs a T7500. If you do, just buy a desktop. The most I'd get is a T7300 for the 4MB of cache.
Dell is charging $500 for 4GB of RAM. Get 1GB, then go on slickdeals and you should be able to find 4GB of RAM for under $200.
You don't really need Vista Ultimate. Home Premium is fine for most people. Definitely not worth the $150 upgrade cost for me.
200GB drive is nice, but really, 160GB is fine and you can always get an external. 40GB for $100 is just not worth it to me. I'd just get the lowest option since the 160GB upgrade is $150. Then buy this and you can use the extra 120GB drive in an external enclosure for the same price.
I just configured your system and it came to under $3500. Dell really took you for a ride. I'd definitely cancel that order since you can get a comparable system for half that price. -
i couldnt wait any longer for my m1330 like you so i canceled and ordered a sz680 and its only going to take 2.5 days from placing the order to get here. im buying my own ram + hdd and that probably saved me at least 300$ from sony and now i even get an extra external drive with esata+express card. look around for a better deal than what you have. the sz6 will be a little behind the m1330 but i got worried after hearing all the problems in this forum so i chose it over the xps. go to a sony store and look at it.
-
Miketlo, I had the Sony Vaio SZ280P. I purchased it also for 4,000 dollars. I hated it. It wasn't fast enough for me with a 2.0 GHZ Core Duo, 2gb of ram, and a 7200 RPM HDD. Thats why I went money crazy and configured the best I could for my Dell. I thought what the hell, My old Sony cost 4,000. Why shouldn't my new computer with better components. Back to the point, I hate my SZ (I'm sure you new one will be better than mine), and thus I will not buy another, rofl--- Its at the San Diego repair center right now.

I really don’t understand why you felt that a Core duo 2GHz with 2GB of RAM and a 7200RPM disk is too slow for office work and general computing.
It is not always about having the fastest hardware that matters when it comes down to performance. It largely depends on how you manage it, what programs you install and how you maintain. There is no point in getting a **** load of RAM and the fastest processor if you install 100 useless tray applications, tool bars, side bars or whatever fancy useless gadgets you find in the internet; and to top it all off use a resource hogging virus guard like Norton with all of its options enabled. Believe me, I’ve seen plenty of notebooks with high end configurations crawling slower than 3 year old Pentium Ms just because of all the crap they have installed in their machines.
If you were not happy about gaming performance, then that is solely because of the graphics adaptor, it has little to do with the processor or how much RAM you have. -
I am also of the opinion that your $4300 was not well spent.
However, if you have it then its not a big deal, you could have gotten a better value but hey your laptop is still alright
If I were spending $4300 though it would have to have a better specifications sheet. -
I must say im also confused to how a 2Ghz C2D could be to slow for you. In general computing and office work my PC (3.2Ghz Quad) is no faster than my 3 year old lappy and thats not really any faster at office stuff than a 4 or 5 year old computer. I think my old PC is 5 years old and its just as fast at normal everyday computing tasks as any system iv'e seen.
Its all about configuring your software properly not the hardware. Iv'e helped about 6 peopel this year configure their brand new laptops properly and straight away it feels 2 to 3 times faster.
The only thing the top top end stuff is better at is benchmark scores, bragging rights, games (but thats teh grphics card 99% of the time), movie encoding, some CAD tools, science & engineering apps. In basically any other case there is no point at all.
Learn how to setup the computer properly and how to make things run well or any system you buy will be to slow for your liking. Plus it will make me sad to know someone has a $4000 dollar computer that is being tortured with bad software configurations.
Did I go Oveboard?
