    Did You Extend Your Warranty?

    Hi, when you bought your new Dell did you extend the warranty and are you happy you did? Or, is it just a way for Dell to make more money?

    I'd just like to use the excuse that...

    because im a poor uni student haha, i didn't extend my warrenty for my 1520, it came with a 3 year warrenty so I'm willing to take the risk... lol

    Well, I bought mine with a 3-year warranty standard. They did offer another two years of warranty (IIRC) right after I purchased it, which was mind boggling to me since the machine was 2 weeks old w/ 3 yrs of warranty.

    I did recently inquire about accidental damage coverage and was told it's going to be $155, so I'm still thinking about it.

    I supposed if you carry your machine a lot and use it a lot (to the point where you might have drinks around it), then it's worth it. If you're leaving it at home most of the time, I think it's safe to go with a 2 yrs warranty.

    I have an old HP that is beat the hell up. This is two years later. I'm glad I got the warranty from Best Buy because I'm going to get everything repiared on it. The screen is jacked, the battery is dead, the computer overhearts when I don't have a fan on it.

    With my new dell i got the 3 year warranty as well because they gave me a good deal on it.

    I bought a system with 3 years of complete care + 3 years Lojack. I do intend to carry around this notebook quite a bit so decent warrenty was needed. I wouldn't pay $300-$400 for any system that cost around $1000 but if I can get 3 years of complete care for around $1000 for decent system, I would definite jump on it, like my XPS M1530. I aways had my eyes on XPS systems but it wasn't easy to find a deal around $1000 that include 3 years of complete care. This month deal had my numbers all over it so I decided to cough up a dough and buy one. It's a peace at mind I paid for, and probably will paid itself out, if I have one accident, during the 3 years ownership. So I think it's definitely worth it, if you can get a right deal.

    hmmm.. well I have never owned a dell but I would have to stay stick with the 3 year if thats what they give you standard, I have never owned a computer for more then a year and a half without getting a new one or upgrading.

    I just got a dell 1520. The warranty was on offer 3 for 2 years at home service for just £79. For £79 its a no-brainer since from experience laptops can go wrong easily and its harder to go changing everything as it requires you to take of the keyboard etc...
    For £79 is crazy since compare it to buying a laptop from currys, comet etc..a 3 year warranty is nearly £200 :S

    Extended ARE a way to make profit. Computers mainly break from deffective parts so that's in the first 3 months. Accidental warranties are nice though, except that they are way overpriced.

    The choice of buying or not buying an extended warranty boils down to a lot of factors. Those factors are all individual value assessments and can't really be quantified in a poll or thread like this. The most information we can discern is how much profit Dell might be making from them.

    I chose to extend my warranty for a number of reasons....

    I purchased it with by Student Discount and the cost to upgrade to a 3 year at home warranty + Complete care was $85 or so, but also made my discount 12% off instead of 6% off (so it paid for itself).

    If it weren't for that I wouldn't have purchased complete care or at home service. Neither one are of major importance to me, but having a long warranty period is important to me. I prefer to spend once and not have to spend again for the lifetime of my machine.

    You also have a higher resale value on a 2+ year old machine with a warranty compared to one without any warranty at all...

    I owned a Dell i5160 (recently replaced with the current i1520) for 3 years and paid about $150 or so to extend the warranty from 1 to 3 years and it was a very smart choice. I can't count how many times I've replaced parts on that machine...

    * HD Replaced numerous times
    * DVD-RW replaced at least twice
    * Power adapter replaced at least 7 times (the power pack would short out)
    * Motherboard replaced twice
    * Memory replaced once

    and probably more...

    I could easily perform all of those changes myself, but the part cost alone for all of those changes would have exceeded $150.

    I always tell people to value it based on how long they plan to own their machine. If you spend $1400 on your machine as I did it is only logical to want that machine to last you as long as possible.

    For me it is covered all around. If I drop it, spill on it, or anything "accidental" Dell will replace it. If it is stolen, burned, or etc. Dell Credit Protector will pay for it...

    My machine should last me 3 years easily so to me the costs to extend the warranty was cheap enough and worth it.

    Well I got the extended warranty on mine. So far I have not had to exercise it but I'm glad I got it anyways. I had to exercise the extended warranty on another device I have. My surround sound system decided to malfunction 6 months after the manufacturer warranty expired but I had an extended through Circuit City. A $1 part fixed it but I wouldn't of known that. Onkyo said that both issues I was having were coincidental and unrelated (lol). Saved me from having to buy another one at a $500+ sticker price (the original system was $500 30 months ago).

    Laptop + Extended Warranty = Happy Customer

    I find laptops always have problems after a year or 2.
