I have a dell inspiron 6000 computer and installed Ram into my laptop. The thing was i tried to push it in and it would not go in. I then later saw there was a spot where u can push the ram in and eventually got it in. I did use lot of force pushing it in.
When i open my laptop, it opens but the screen is black and then turns off in like 7 seconds. I then took out the new ram and installed the old ram. It still has the same problem. Does that mean my laptop does not work anymore? Does it also mean i cannot return my RAM to the online site where i purchased my ram since theres a 30 day policy? I am not even sure now if my new ram is still okay where i can get a refund.

Id say you fubar your laptop and possibly the new ram too.
OUCH!! -
what do you mean with "fubar" OneCool? /// well I don't really know about this but there are people here that can help
I will be watching this because I think is interesting!

i bought the right ram. It does fit but my computer will not turn on now
-
By forcing the ram into dimm slot.It most likely shorted two (or) of the pins together thus shorting the circuit.Basically shorting the motherboard.
Not to say it cant be fixed.
Edit : when it comes to computers no hardware should ever need to be forced into the motherboard. -
Does that mean i most likely damaged the new ram as well. I still have like 15 days where i can return it back but i dont know if i damaged the new ram or not.

My son has a 6000m and I have replaced the memory on the bottom and it is a
DDR2 PC2-4200 SODIMM if you used anything else like DDR3 its the wrong config and will not fit right. but you said you have the right DDR2 so......
The problem at this point is you forced it and you may have broken it.
You said that the old memory when put in will not work as well, how about when you leave it out? There is memory on board right? Try to start without anything in the slot.

You want me to open the computer without any memory? I am not sure if there is memory on board.

I'm glad I haven't messed up my laptop, but everytime I open my laptop to do something, like I changed the cooling fan, installed ram, wireless card, antennas. I'm always scared that my laptop will not turn on after I put pieces back together
-
okay i tried it and it still does not work

Just leave one module in the one you did not change
unless you forced both -
-
It took me a while to take out the 2 old ram. When i figured how to take out the first one, it took lot of forcing to take out second one. Then it took A TON of forcing to put in the 1st new one b/c i didnt know how but the 2nd one was easy because i then saw the hole.
When i open my laptop, it has a sound that usually boots the computer. However, screen is black like when it is closed. In 7-8 seconds within starting the computer, it shuts off with the shutdown sound. -
I just feel like you broke the channel, get the magnifying glass out, serousily and exam the channel (slot) well and see if the pins are ok and if you broke any of the plastic.
Do you know anyone that works on laptops? I think you need help. If you were around me I would look at it for you (For free of course lol) -
Chances are that you either damaged the connector, the motherboard, or both. What RAM (exactly) did you purchase? Did you check out the service manual for the laptop?
Generally speaking, when you have to actually apply a lot of force when working on a computer something is terribly wrong.
There is not much more that I can say, other than you most likely permanently damaged the computer. Could you post some pictures? -

How do i post pictures up? -
For images/pictures you can use actual HTML code, the IMG tag (kind of like the quote tag for NBR), or upload attachments by hitting the 'Advanced' button when you go to post.
Take a look at this guide, it is one way to do it. ( Link) -
use photo bucket its quicker and free
-
okay i will post the pics soon. Thank you guys for looking at my thread.

You know I wonder if the ram is being seated right.
Also this computer may need both ram sockets filled to boot
OK with the ram out, you put it in at an angle ( search you tube there are videos on putting in so dimms its the same all the time) then you gently push down and it clicks in, but its to be easy to put into the socket.
if a pin is not aligned, just one it will not work.
there are 2 side clips that hold the dimm in, they must be to the side opposite, when you do this the memory pops up and it comes out easy, I think that is the part you did wrong, if you did not push the holders on the side to the side then it would be hard to pull out the ram -
You should carefully try removing and reseating 1 memory module. It's possible that you still have not put it into it's slot perfectally straight. Memory is sensative and if it's not treated gently, the chip may not align correctly into its slot. Try again to install one chip-- it it doesn't work toss it on the ground and jump on it.

If the ram is not being seated right, the computer will not recognized it but still will boot up, (if you only adding ram. mine had 256mb in it so I added 1GB more, then my pc was still showing 256mb) Because when I installed ram in my laptop that happened to me, the ram was not seated right, computer boot up but it didn't recognize the new ram, so I had to turn it off and do it again. Now, I don't think the computer needs both ram sockets filled since my computer came with one ram stick only and the other socket was empty and everything was working fine.
-
If you are only going to use one memory stick, that stick needs to be in DIMM slot A. Remove all the RAM from the system, and put in just one chip. Just don't force it this time.

okay this is my album with 6 pictures i just did. Can you guys see it well? 2 of the pics have the old ram stuck in... doesn't matter if its new ram or old ram b/c that is how i stuck it in. the other 4 photos show how the slots look now. Anyone can tell me anything from what they see?
I can take more better pics but this is the best i can do now. Can you guys view my pics? I just posted my username so i assume u guys can see the 6 photos? If not, i will post all the individual links. -

in this pic the ram is not seated right
you should not see the gold part on the end of the memory cards at all when seated right -
okay i cannot put the ram in where i cannot see any of the gold. I have stuck it in perfectly though.
-
-
wow it works now! Thanks! It asks me to strike F1 to continue or f2 to run setup utility. What should i press? !!!!!!!
-
You mean you cannot get the RAM in there more without using force? Then you probably did brake the connector.
WHAT...hit F1!!! -
okay now the ram works. Thanks everyone!
-
Awesome. You definitely scared us for a little bit.
-
close it up and enjoy! -
Make sure you set the date and time because when this happens, date and time will not be right. That happens to me sometimes, if you don't set the date and time you will have problems with some website certificates like paypal, ebay, etc
Did i just broke my laptop when installing RAM wrong?
