Did your Inspiron start to worn out?

If so, in how much time? (Months, years)

If not, what are you doing to prevent it from worn out?

I think this information would help alot of users, that are seeking advise to keep their laptop in shape.

I think the major problems for worn out is with SILVER LAPTOPS, as it loses its color.

My last laptop palm rest area worn out...

Now I got Inspiron 1520, and worried about it worn out, because i use it alot for work.

A laptop will get worn out with use. Obviously you can be gentle with it, but it's an inevitability.

I'm very glad the m1330 doesn't have a plastic palmrest!

I take my 1520 everywhere with me around the university. I've only had it for about 35 days and the wear i've experience so far is a few light scratches and a nick near the touchpad. I wish the plastic was a little bit more durable for travel and constant use.

I've had my Inspiron 8200 since July 2002. I used it as my main computer until September 2005. I've left it on several times for 24 hours straight doing 3D rendering and data analysis / AI with MATLAB (CPU at full load). I've also been lugging it around in my backpack as a "portable".

There's absolutely no sign of it wearing out. The battery is dead but that's expected. The screen is a bit scratched through contact with the keyboard while it's closed but it still looks as good as when I got it (no dead pixels, still bright enough). I replaced the original CD-Writer / DVD ROM drive because I messed it up (I tried to upgrade the drive's firmware by booting from CD; obviously this was a dumb idea). I upgraded the hard drive in March 2005. Still works perfectly.

Just last March I put it to good use as an additional 3D rendering station when I was doing a rush job on an engineering design project and then I used it as the demonstration machine for a new tablet and pen system we developed, which meant people played with it all day, running an OpenGL-based painting program.

I'm sure there are other people with longer lasting Inspirons, but I've been quite impressed with it so far. I'm only getting a new laptop now because it really doesn't have enough RAM to run my applications and I want something lighter.

Funny thing is, the keyboard's got flex that the people here keep complaining about (I just noticed it today, after 5 years). The plastic creaks and the hinges bounce. But it held up.

I didn't do much to keep it working. I just tossed it into my backpack when I needed to move it. The only thing I did was use a desk fan to cool it while the CPU is at full load for extended periods of time. I also cleaned the heat sink and fan. But that's it.

New inspirons are not as well built like the old ones. Besides, I don’t think Inspiron 8200 has painted chassis. The exterior is made of black plastic, right ? Not painted like the new Inspirons, therefore you wont notice ware as much as with the new ones.

I had an inspiron 640m for about a year, and even though I used an external keyboard most of the time, slight paint wearing was visible when I sold it. You can buy one of those palm rest protective films/stickers or make something on your own. I’m using a transparent OHP sheet cut out to the exact size of the palm rest pasted using clear tape with my current m1210. Its barely visible, and ads a shiny look (to the matte painted palmrest). Take a look :

I thought all the Inspirons had were coloured plastics. The new ones are actually painted? Didn't know that.

You're right, the I8200 is black plastic. There isn't even a scratch on it even though I've taken it to machine shops and electronics labs.

Inspiron 6400 has recurrent hinge problems and as a result, the casing around them is starting to break. 15 months old.

I've had an Inspiron 500m that's been seeing heavy use since 2003... the keyboard and palmrest have both started to wear down; becoming "shiny" where my fingers and palms have been resting. It's not too noticeable from afar though.

I've had an Inspiron 6000 for over 2 years, used almost daily. Palmrest starting to lose its colour, a couple of light scratches on the lid, and a small piece of plastic chipped off a corner of the lid. Otherwise, still in great condition.

That's absolutely gorgeous man, do you know of any place specifically that sells pre-made or 'kit' type things for dell notebooks? I really want to have one right around when the notebook is new so that I can avoid the horrible discolourations I've done to my past notebooks on the palmrest.

What exactly is a transparent OHP sheet and what did you use to cut it and how exactly did you apply it? Appreciate the time.
