I know the GT8600 in the inspiron is ddr2 and in the XPS ddr3.

But is there a physical difference in the cards itself, so will the ddr3 card not fit in the inspiron.

According to a dell person via the chat is the ddr3 a different card, but it's only the memory not?

So why can't they put in a ddr3 for some extra money?

Because the cards are different; one uses ddr2 memory, the other uses ddr3. They COULD put in a different card, they just don't. It's like the studios; that's not the goal accomplished by that product line.

i too would like to be able to put ddr3 8600 on my 1720... how about if it undergoes surgery? would the motherboard even accept it?

The GPU is the same but the DDR2 version in the 1720 is on a seperate, discrete, graphics card with the DDR3 versions having the GPU and VRAM on the motherboard itself.

Yup, its a no go. 8600GT DDR3 is a chip soldered onto the motherboard, but 8600DDR2 is actually swap outable.
