Besides the couple hundred more dollars, whats the difference between a XPS and a inspiron/vostro?

why do people buy xps' when inspirons and vostros can be spec'd for so much cheaper?

XPS is Dell's premium line of Laptops. You're paying for a higher level of construction, design, and support.

I bought the m1330 even though a similarly spec'd Inspiron would have been a few hundred dollars less. Why? Because of the looks! :)

Having said that however, there's nothing wrong with the Inspiron or Vostro line. For some people, having a Flamingo Pink laptop lid turns their crank, for others, not so much. I personally think the Vostro's are really nice looking machines as well.

XPS is a premium brand; they are supposedly built better than Inspiron/Vostro (but with M1330 this statement is somewhat questionable). They also have better customer support. And better hardware options :
    • Graphics options : M1730 has the best VGA option, M1530 has DDR3 8600MGT where as Inspiron has DD2 (significantly slower), M1330 also has DDR3 8400GS while rest of the inspirons have DDR2
    • WLED Screens (1330/M1530)
    • Better design : Thin profile (1330/M1530), shiny carbon fiber exterior and fancy lights (M1730)
    • Slot loading optical drives (1330/M1530)

EDIT Khris beat me to it ;)

the inspiron doesn't have high definition output (dvi or hdmi) - which defeated the purpose of getting the built-in bluray player on the 1520!

so i went the xps1530 instead.

Whoa whoa, hold it. Is this right? This is the first time I've ever heard of such a thing. I was under the assumption that ALL of the 8400m GS in the Dell lines were DDR3

Sometimes there's so much mis-information spoken as if factual, it's hard to weed through it all.
