I am going to be a college student next year and was looking into getting a notebook. I like Dells but am unsure on the differneces between the Latitude and Inspiron lines. Which is best for college?

Inspiron...Latitude is made as a more stable platform at a higher price for business use.

    "Latitude vs. InspironTM
Dell offers notebook systems that meet a wide range of needs. Dell Inspiron notebooks are ideal for individuals and home users who demand fast performance and the latest technology at an aggressive price, without the need for long product lifecycles and managed transitions.

    Latitude vs. Dell PrecisionTM
Much like Latitude, Dell PrecisionTM mobile workstations are built to meet the needs of business. Precisions are certified to run a variety of workstation-class applications and are optimized for high-end performance and intensive processing demands often required by engineering, finance, software development, digital content creation, digital video editing and GIS applications."

This cnet article talks about some of the features unique to Latitudes. Also, the latitudes have the a proper port replicator option and have both the pointing stick and glide pad.

I have one of each (Inspiron 8600 and Latitude D800). In addition to the comments by winian above:

    Inspiron 8600 Pros:
    Higher performance video card available
    Less expensive

    Latitude D800 Pros:
    More external ports
    Trimetal case
Rumored better service and tech support

Of course these are two models that are nearly identical in all other respects.
