Ok, I wasn't sure what to name it... but w/e I get my 1720 today (its on its way right now actually) and i heard somewhere its not good to use your laptop on wood... is this true? and if so why not? I know aluminum and marble are pretty sweet to use, just curious on wood

Because it doesn't allow heat to pass through it..it just retains the heat so your laptop sits on a warm surface. Its not that bad though really
-
Over time it could ruin the wood, but that's extremely rare. Just dust your surface with lemon oil and it should help. Also, in regards to airflow, check to see where the inflow and outflow are and how air would pass. Wood is slower to pass heat, but the most dissipates through the airflow alone.
-
ok, i didnt think it would be horrible to use it on a wood table bu i wanted to check 1st, i'll check out where in intake and exhaust are later then when it shows up
-
you can always get a notebook cooler..they're quite cheap
-
As long as there is open airways to vent the heat out from the laptop, any surface will do. As others have already mentioned, wood can become damaged over time from the heat dissipated from the laptop.
Gateway tablet's actually have the battery elevate the back end of the laptop so the vents underneath get better air circulation. While it is a good idea, it certainly hurts if you're resting the laptop on your lap. And it just looks ugly that way. (See pictures of the Gateway m285-E to see what I mean) -

i have the Targus tornado notebook chill pad and it's great. it is powered by a single USB port and it certainly keeps the airflow moving to give a nice reduction in heat around the bottom. i've noticed that my notebook fan comes on less frequently and for less time when i use the chill pad.

i might look into hat, its just hard finding some for a 17" and it looked like the pacific breeze was more size friendly, that targus might be if its the one i'm thinking of
