Hello, i would like to ask if somebody know if I can change Radeon 3650 which I have in my Studio for nvidia 8600m? I found this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dell-Vostro-1700-GeForce-8600M-GT-256MB-Graphics-Card_W0QQitemZ260345889210QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_LaptopAccess_RL?hash=item260345889210&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1300%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 on ebay but I`m not sure if I can change it. Thanks for help.

The graphics card really can't be changed out.
The card is not designed to be switched out.
Its also in a special slot and you'll have a heck of a time
finding a another card that will fit the slot.
As a standard rule of thumb for laptops...
The processor and the GPU cannot be changed out. -
The processor can be changed as for the gpu i think it can be changed since it's dedicated and NOT sloderd but you must find a gpu that uses dell proprietary slot.(MXM gpu dose not work)
-
Thanks for all replyes. Do I loose warranty if I will pull up cover of the motherboard? I will probably look inside so I will know what I`m looking for. I thought that graphic card is in that MXM slot so it could be changeable.

Yes, if you open up the case beyond the access panels, you void
the warranty.
Of course..if you don't tell them they won't know.
But if you need service and the tech discovers the case was tampered...
it could create problems. -
Mine continues to be still under warranty for next 3 yrs! -
I understand but at a former Dell Tech rep I can assure you
that if you call Dell and informed then you opened the case
for whatever reason beyond the access panels they will notate
the acct and it will no longer be under warranty.
Now its been 3 years since I worked for them so maybe it has changed..
I really doubt it though.
By access panels I mean covers that allow you to upgrade the RAM or
hard drive and stuff like that. -
The GPU can not be changed out. Dell is using the same system the apple uses for there gpus. If Apple was able to change them out they would not send me a logic board to replace the gpu. I fix about 3 logic boards a week under apple warranty at work. The same goes for Toshiba's that have the dedicate gpu on the board and not in a slot.

I think you're allowed to open the bottom panel and add RAM without voiding anything. Changing the processor or GPU (if it's possible) will definitely void the warranty.

SomeFormOFhuman has the dumbest username.
That 8600M GT DDR2 card being listed is a proprietary designed card by Dell and it isn't MXM. -
So...from what iv'ed read here,if you want to change the gpu you must replace the moteherboard.

ok guys, thanks for help. I will stay with my radeon 3650...

The HD3650 it's a verry good card it's the equivalent of an nvidia 8600.
BTW the 8000 series(especially 8600) overheat too much. -
SomeFormOFhuman has the dumbest username.
Up till today for over a year and counting (LOL), it has never gone above 68*C, the highest recorded ever for my 8600M GT.
I believe most 1720 owners will also agree on this.
And yeah in regards to the topic, the 8600M GT DDR2 is actually an equivalent; so upgrading ( if/example) from the HD3650 DDR2 to an 8600M GT DDR2 is not worth considering for as the gain is... minimal or none at all. -
You are one of the lucky laptop owners that have 8600gt.
