What are the different stages besides build? It's now within 3 days of the estimated shipping date and it's still saying build. =/

    Build > Kitting > Testing >Boxing >Shipping
kitting > testing > boxing takes one day.
    boxing is 2-4 days.

I think there's Build, Kitting, Testing, Boxing, then shipped, but I could be wrong. You should check out the threads about the 1720 delays... They have some good info in them.

Okay thanks... I was wondering why it wasn't already testing... what do they do, tell it to run 3dmax and call it a day?

Testing is actually when they install the stuff on your computer.

After I read that 1720 delay thread.. my hopes just plummeted. When do they tell you about a delay? I'm reading about getting emails on the day it's supposed to ship.

Yeah, yours is probably delayed, if it isnt even to testing yet.
They call you the day it was expected to ship.
Trust me, it happened to me twice, I know what I am talking about.

This is great... considering I have one of the less popular colors...

If I get delayed I might as well cancel and go pick up an Asus Gx series from Newegg and have it by next week. =/

It's possible... what's the major delay right now? I would think it'd be lid colors, but I'm not too worry about that as Yellow isn't one of the big sellers. I heard something about graphics cards, and I am worried about that.

Its the lid. Nothing else would delay it past a week or 2.
Also, you can call and ask. They may be able to tell you.

How hard is it to make a laptop lid?? Are they ordering them in sets of 5 or something??

    These delays are pretty crappy.

Basically, what they did was order too many of the wrong lids.
When Dell makes a lid, they stupidly, fuse together the color and the screen.
So when they want to make a blue computer with a wsxga lcd for example, they grab a blue wsxga screen. What they should have done was made the colors snap on, so instead, they would have to grab a wsxga screen and a blue snap on lid.
There is a shortage of LCD, so instead of being able to just make more of the colors, they are unable to make anything.

Omg... that is the stupidest idea I have ever heard. I thought the colors were just basically that... snap on or screw on to the computer chassis, with the LCD mounted in the chassis.

Sucks that Newegg doesn't carry any cheaper 8600M GT notebooks...the cheapest ones are the Asus ($1900 =/)

From what it sounds like, Dell's buying the entire top of the laptop as a single unit. =/

Do Vostro's tend to ship out faster? I may just go for a vostro instead... and it's a tad cheaper.

Practically the entire chassis is shipped to the Manufacturing center as one piece. The supplier actually does a good bulk of the assemble on the chassis.

BTW, at the Manufacturing plant, the phases are Kiting > Build > Burn (testing) > Boxing > DC

It's easier to assemble. And builders are less likely to screw up building it.

By far the biggest delays are parts. The chassis are fairly in short supply as suppliers slowly ramp up to meet Dell's demand.

Right now, I'm seriously considering ordering a Vostro simultaneously if it gets delayed. I hear people getting their Vostros in a week.

Well, if it's still in build by tomorrow night...

Go ahead and order another computer. It doesn't hurt, because you wont be charged until it ships anyways. canceling is easy.

Yeah, I'll do it tomorrow night if I don't hear a change in status.

This is sad... but the vostro is looking mighty good now...
