The build quality on my Studio 1535 is really, astonishingly poor. All cheap plastic and case creaks and noises. Very flimsy, even for a budget laptop. My question is this- Would it be possible to purchase another case- a better case, perhaps and XPS or something similar, and move the internals from the Studio to the new case? Or would that just be a logistcal nightmare not even worth attempting?

It won't fit in another case. You might as well return it and buy another computer.

I think you're over exaggerating about its build quality. It's not a thinkpad. If you wanted a thinkpad, then get one.

I think you've never seen my machine, so judging any over exaggeration might be a stretch for you? The case creaks and is flimsy, there's definite bend to it, where the PCMIA slot sits there's just a thin layer of plastic over the slot, and several times when picking it up, the case has actually separated. This is all after of course the entire right side of my topcase came apart unexpectedly. I've been dealing with laptops a very long time, and know very well what's good build quality and what's not. It's entirely possible that I got a lemon, but that doesn't change the fact that the build quality on MINE is terrible. As for getting a Thinkpad...it'd be great if we all had a thousand dollars to drop on a new laptop just because we don't particularly like our current one, wouldn't it? Unfortunately, that's not the case. I asked a simple question, there's absolutely no reason for you to be a condescending putz.

If it's really that bad why the hell haven't you got in touch with Dell and got a replacement?

I actually purchased an extended, onsite warranty, but the one time I got in touch, about the topcase coming apart, I was informed that they were putting on my record 'accidental damage which the customer then made worse by attempting home repair', because I made the mistake of saying I tried to snap the plastic back into place, and that it wasn't covered, because Dell doesn't cover -any- plastic parts. I intend to call them again, likely today, and mention the somewhat excessive heat that I get off my left palmrest. Maybe I'll get some results from that, maybe not.
