inspirons are low end and horribly constructed. latitudes are business notebooks with business construction, far better built then inspirons, and while still not as nice as thinkpads or other high end business models, they are a very sturdy build , come with less bloatware then inspirons and better service. precisions i believe are mostly for graphics and engineering professions, they resemble inspirons but are made far better and usually come with opengl optimized graphics cards

For your purposes, and Inspiron would be best. You can get a decently configured notebook for under $1.4k. If it's just for surfing the web and stuff, an E1505 should be perfectly fine. They are not horribly constructed, just not as well as Latitudes or Precisions. The paint wears off very easily though. Just make sure to get the Windows CD when you buy so that you can reformat the machine... it will make it A LOT faster.

    Inspiron: Cosumer and Mainstream Line
    - Construction: Usually plastics, not as well put together and not as sturdy
    - Price: Starts off with the most basic and the cheapest, and infinate configuration possibilites (as Dell tries to cater to all budgets with this line)
    - Support and Warranty: Starts off with the most basic, and average support. If you are in the USA the support lines are usually outsourced (to say, India). Not as bad as some other brands but could be better.

    Latitude: Business Line
    - Construction: Metal alloy chassis/lid (Aluminium/Magnesium usually), what Dell calls their "Road Ready" design.
    - Price: Will be higher than the equivalent Inspiron, as the base spec usually starts off higher with a better warranty plan. Removable modular drive bay for added flexibility
    - Support and Warranty: Usually comes with at least Next Business Day parts/labour On-Site response. Saperate dedicated phone line for support and you should stay in the local (domestic) call center and not get it routed half-way round the world.

    Precision: Professional Line
    - Construction: Metal alloy chassis/lid (Aluminium/Magnesium usually), what Dell calls their "Road Ready" design.
    - Price: The highest out of all the Dell's laptop lines as its got the best base specs.
    - Support and Warranty: Again, a saperate dedicated phone line for support and handled from a local call center (and not get outsourced elsewhere).

    XPS: Enthusists/Power User Line
    - Construction: Metal alloy chassis/lid (Aluminium/Magnesium usually), what Dell calls their "Road Ready" design.
    - Price: Higher than the equivalent Inspiron, as its got better base specs and a better "XPS Warranty pack".
    - Support and Warranty: Dedicated XPS phone support line which is again handled locally. Otherwise its more or less similar to the Latitude/Precision.

At the moment, Dell has a completely different design between the Inspiron and the Latitdue lines.

The Precision M65 shares the same 15.4" chassis as the Latitude D820, while the Precision M90 uses the same 17" design as the Inspiron 9400.

The XPS M1210 and M2010 have their own designs, while the XPS M1710 uses the same 17" design as the Inspiron 9400.

It is said that since the Inspiron 9400/Precision M90/XPS M1710 share the same basic chassis design, the i9400 would also share/have the metal alloy "road-ready" chassis and lid. You'll have to ask i9400 owners here for a confirmation. If this is true, then the i9400 should be the most well built/put together out of all the Inspirons.

As for other brands (such as HP/Compaq, Toshiba etc.) the story is usually similar. The consumer lines are less well constructed (usually of plastics) and cheaper with more basic specs and warranty, while the business lines are better constructed (usually metal alloy or carbon fiber/composites) and more expensive with better warranty plans.

If you want build quality above all else, you should look at that brand's business/professional line to begin with.

If you are the average user and wants the best value, then just look at their standard consumer lines.

other than trying to configure the same setups (have tried it), can you tell me in general between the e1405/640m price wise? i know they are the same notebook, but it seems like the 640m is generally cheaper, but the normal inspiron coupons on this site cant be used. it also has some more 'options' that would appeal to a small business user (not as pretty/simple of a buying interface).

was just wondering if there was an actual trend, or if the prices just fluctuate and thats that.

Prices just fluctuate..buy whichever is cheaper at the time of purchase.

Make sure you take advantage of the dell coupons. Often they are only applicable on the inspirion models.
