Hi - I have a new Dell Latitude 820 laptop with both a touchpad mouse and a keyboard joystick mouse. It seems the joystick mouse is constantly being hit by my wifes fast moving fingers and consequently the curser is being moved to different sections of the document or email she is working on. Is there a
way in Win XP or the laptops settings to disable the joystick mouse and use only the touchpad mouse? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    From the Manual: (available HERE)

Customizing the Touch Pad and Track Stick

You can use the Mouse Properties window to disable the touch pad and track stick or adjust their settings.

    1. Open the Control Panel, and then click Mouse. For information about the Control Panel, see Windows Help and Support Center.

    2. In the Mouse Properties window:

    * Click the Device Select tab to disable the touch pad and track stick.

    * Click the Touch Pad tab to adjust touch pad and track stick settings.

    3. Click OK to save the settings and close the window.

It goes without saying that you should choose 'disable' on the track stick. =)

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. When I looked at Device Manager the only option under Mice and other Pointing devices was "Alps touchpad" which I don't want to disable. How would I change the setting in BIOS?

Hmm, in my mouse properties window I don't have a "Device select" tab, and those options don't appear available. I am using XP Pro Service pack 2. Any other thoughts?

    When you boot, hit f2.

EDIT: I guess ALPS has a unified driver for the stick and the pad. I'm coming up blank on this, really. It should be an option in the mouse properties tab...

The driver is here- the linkyou can try installing it again to see if that brings the option back.

If at all in doubt, get on the Dell website, choose support, and do a chat with a support rep, they should be able to clear it all up.

Ok, that does it. I downloaded and installed the driver, and even though it said it was the same version it did bring up the proper mouse options and I was able to disable the tracking stick. Thanks so much for your help. You don't know how much easier this is going to make my life now that my wife's frustration with this will end. Thanks again.

There also might be a way to disable it in the bios, I had an old compaq with dual pointers, you could disable/enable them directly from there.
