I have the TMSP Dual Layer DVD Writer drive. It is rated at 24x read speed for normal cds. However I was ripping a cd into Itunes and it was only ripping at 8x. It seems to burn very fast burning a standard size cd in 2-3 minutes. And it ripped a 8 GB DVD to the harddrive (7200 RPM) in 30 minutes. Is this normal? Should I call dell?

I take that back, now sometimes it burns a cd fast and other times it burns it really slow. It just took me 6 minutes to burn a standard music cd.

It normally fluctuates because of the media. There is some media that will burn quicker than others. I've had songs that burn at 8x, and some that burn at 2x.

The read speed and burning speed are two different things. Unlike desktops, laptops rarely burn at maximum speed since you have the smaller drive.

This is high quality TDK media I am using though. I really think it is a problem with the drive because it also spits out a bunch of coasters.

Then call dell and request a new drive. They should send one out to you in 2 business days.
