I'm planning on buying the xps 140. The thing that bites is that there doesnt seem to be any coupons. I've heard of some fat wallet discount. How does that work?? I've also heard of people gettin like a 10% discount if they are repeat dell buyers. Do you think I could get the 10% and the fatwallet discount? (5% or so?) I might be ordering this bad boy tonight, so any info is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks :decision:

it has directions on how to use the fatwallet discount. I've haven't heard of the 10% discount rules, but you should be able to get the fatwallet. If you are a college student or possibly through your (or parents) office of employement, you might be able to get a discount with that. You can call dell and verify about the university/employement discount.

Do most other manufacturers support student discounts?

I'm not really sure. Its usually based on the university. The university has contracts with certain manufacturers to offer discounts so you might want to check with your university. I would assume that some other manufacturers like HP or gateway might offer student discount, but I'm not positive on that issue.

I tried the 10% returning customer discount routine and its a Big YMMV. Even as a true returning customer which I spent about $10,000 through them in the past few years on both Home and Small Biz.
I called and talked with about 5 different CS reps but none of them ever heard of it.
3 were Indian and the other 2 were American.

Stepdad has an HP. His notebook promted my purchase of my inspiron 9300. His issues with product failure and quirkiness in his HP promted me to buy a Dell.

I looked into the XPS systems. Seemed like a better deal to get the 9300 with larger display and pay the $200 (US) upgrade for the go 6800. Then I paid another $75 (before $10 rebate at newegg) for a Mushkin 1gb stick of ddr 2. Installation of the ram could not have been easier.

With my upgrades (graphics, wireless with bluetooth and hard drive to 80gig) I paid $13xx. shipped.

I ordered my system on Sunday. I rec'd my system on Friday. That amazed me since they said est. shipping date was the 20th and I rec'd the unit on the 16th.

The insprion systems have a free upgrade to an 8x dvd burner and a free printer (with trial size ink, mind you... dirty dirty dirty!). Add that to an instant $350 discount (went up $50 cos of my video upgrade) and you have quite a deal.

To get a similar system in the box stores, you'll pay more. With Dell, I was able to customize the system and upgrade the components I cared about. I'm a gamer (well, 1 game.. America's Army, build on the Unreal engine) so I wanted a rig that would replace my Athlon64 3200 system. This one comes quite close.

I'll be posting my own review soon.
