How long are you letting it run for?

Find the free software sticky and use either JKDefrag or Auslogics and try again; the windows default one isnt as good as those.

Yeah...you should be defraging your HD after every big HD shift (ie after installing/uninstalling a game/application, etc.) just to keep the HD up to speed, and to keep the defrag short and sweet.

Of course, the speed of defragmentation also depends on your hardware configuration (ie CPU speed, HD speed, etc), the volume/fragmentedness of your harddrive, and the numbers of applications running, because Vista automatically decreases the priority of the defrag process when you have other processes (ie Internet Explorer) running.

Also, note that a typical defrag takes 3-4 hours to complete for a 200gb HD, so give it some time, make sure you have no other applications running, and set the system to "High Performance" mode. If it is taking longer than expected, then your harddrive might be highly fragmented...to be sure, run the administrator command prompt, type "defrag C: -a" (without the quotes), and change the "C:" to your driveletter if it is not C. Let windows analyze your HD, and if it is not very fragmented (ie 10-20% frag), then your defrag.exe might not be working properly...if that's the case, try Diskeeper 12 (download the demo version, I recommend Pro Premium), let it defrag, and take not on how long it takes....

If your defrag.exe is indeed Nuked....then you might want to consider some other 3rd party defrag solutions....such as O&O Defrag or Diskeeper...

Thanks for all the info! I'm going to use JkDefrag in a while and then make sure I have everything shut down. I might have had explorer up. Hopefully this will work better!

Try JKDefrag. Google and download it. See if it works.

Edit: Darn, I should have refreshed the page before responding. Everyone said what I just said. :p

I recommend O&O Defragment 10 Pro, but first try this: go to run and type CMD
    than type: defrag c: -a
this is to analyse the drive
and than type: defrag c: -v
this is to force the defrag process.

I always like to run a disk check before running a defragmenter.
