I have had a dell vostro 1500 running xp for about 2 months and it has been great up til now. However it has just started having a problem. Before it was fine, but now when i put a disc in the drive it makes a loud noise for a few seconds, and the computer cannot read the disc. It can't even reconise a disc, it is as if there is not one in the drive. On "My Computer" where the disc usually shows up, there is nothing there.
This happens with games, dvds and cds. What is wrong with the disc drive? Can i fix it or do i need to give dell a ring?

Anyone?????

drive sounds dead
give dell a ring, they will probably just send you a replacement drive
should be very easy to install.. -
I think you should put your laptop in the middle of your livingroom floor, surround it with lit, scented candles (expensive ones, not the cheap dollar store ones), make sure the stars, moon and planets are all aligned properly and the Feng Shui of the room overall is calm and peaceful. Once you've got this properly arranged, take off all your clothes and dance naked around your laptop listening to Biff Naked and singing the entire score to the musical RENT.
If none of this helps, then please feel free to call Dell as it's obviously a mechanical failure and will need to be replaced. -
And it seems to be working now all of a sudden lol, but i'll see how it goes. -
might be a PEBKAC.
google what it means... -

I'm also incredibly amused by the thought of someone actually Googling it and then realizing what it means.
