I had a Toshiba for 3 years, then a Sony Vaio for 3 years and just got my 1720 Friday. I immediately noticed the monitor is not as bright as my Vaio and about par with the old Toshiba. Not that it looks bad, just not as bright and clear as I am used to. I was also looking at an HP 9700 and it seems they have better monitors, maybe??

How have others coped with this? Do you just get used to it? Or was it a big let down? Honestly, I bought the 1720 on price/features and I wanted a bigger screen. However, the Vaio has a 15" landscape and the 1720's is not significantly bigger - to my disappointment! I might return mine for another landscape 15" now!

I've always heard that those Vaios had the best (brightest/sharpest) screens.

Aren't all notebook screens in landscape orientation? Or do you mean widescreen?

Dell have about 3 different companies for 17" LCD displays. It all boils down to rather if you get a good one, or not.

"However, the Vaio has a 15" landscape and the 1720's is not significantly bigger"

You most likely bought the same resolution screen that you had in your Vaio. The bigger screen will only make things look bigger if you have the same resolution, if you get a higher resolution then text can be the same size, but you will have more room to work.

Yes, meant widescreen. Overall the display looks good and the resolution is fine (yes, about the same as the Vaio but I do understand bigger of the same resolution = bigger pixels) but it is really the brightness and angle. I had to turn the brightness on the Vaio down and I can't get this one high enough. And the Vaio was good at every angle. Trade-offs. But the HP ones looked better in the store. I guess I can still return it.

    They always do. :)

IMO, dell has been having issues with display panels and crappy speakers since I have been monitoring this forum. And yeah, I had a dell for a couple of weeks. People call it luck of the draw to get a good one with Dell. I call it lack of quality control.

Fujitsu and Vaios gnerally have the best screens... HP used to be there, but I am not sure now.. Seen lots of grainy/dull HPs lately... As mentioned earlier, it's a luck of the draw, with dell.. You could try returning it for another, on the chance that yournext dell has a screen by another manufacturer... I have a XPS M1330/ Toshiba LED backlit LCD, and it's as good as any other.. well, maybe except for some by fujitsu.. Basically they had better viewing angles...

I am going to use it for a few days to see if it is truly me or the screen! ;) If I return it, I'll get something else. I should have known better than to order something that I had not seen before hand.
