I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and when I'm running it off the battery, sometimes they display won't come back on after it goes off (I have it set to turn off after one minute). It also happens sometimes after I try to come back from hibernation or sleep. The only solution I've been able to find was to hold down the power button to restart the computer. Here are the rest of my settings for running on battery:

Turn off display: After 1 minute
Turn off hard drive: After 3 minutes
    System suspend: After 2 minutes
Timeout to hibernate: After 5 minutes
    Display brightness: level 3

    So what gives?

just my preference, in this sequence:
    . turn off display
    . hibernate
    . suspend
    . turn off hard drive

some systems do take a while, sometimes up to minutes, to restart when recovering from suspension/drive turning off

    cheers ...

I've had this problem in the past, but found that upgrading the bios fixed the issue.

I had this problem as well. Once I ran a registry cleaner, the problem stopped. I think it's a combination of installed and removed programs that cause it.
