I was wondering if there is any way to tell if I have an IR receiver in my laptop. There is an IR window at the front, and if I shine a bright light into it I can see a small black dome surrounded by shiny metal. So I think it should be there, but when I look in Device Manager I can't see anything that would indicate an IR receiver. Anything specific I should look for in Device Manager? Any other way I could tell its there and functional before actually getting a remote and trying to get it to work with it?

Yeah you have it. I dont think it is standard though, as i think it will only work with the remote control that fits in the card slot on the side of the laptop.

Yep, it's the black plastic thingy beneath your media control buttons (or I guess I should say it's behind the plastic) but like Nizzy said, it'll only work with dell's remotes.

Unfortunately Dell does not offer the remote to Australians. Therefore I'd like to confirm they include the internal hardware in a functional way.
I was hoping I could get one of our universal remotes to send the appropriate codes. I have seen posts on the 'Net from others who seem to have successfully learned the Dell remote.
Or surely there must be software out there that will show the raw IR codes the PC is receiving through the device and possibly even allow us to remap them. But there just doesn't seem to be any IR device in my device manager, so I'm just not sure how its connected/ interfaces with the system. Surely other want to unlock the IR receiver on their system, no? -
Who said Dell does not offer the travel remote to Australian? I found it as a AUD$26.40 option on the 1720 product page. The remote control IR receiver should be standard on 1720.

I didn't see the option when I bought mine two months ago... Do they offer it separately? If not then I'm still in the same boat.
Do I have an IR receiver on my 1720?
