I want to connect my e1405 to my tv. I know I need an s video to RCA cable. The cable at radioshack was $48. Clearly a ripoff. I decide to buy it online but there are two different s video to rca cables.

    There is this one: http://www.svideo.com/msvmrca12.html

And then I found this one: http://www.svideotorca.com/7pintorca.html

Now do any of you use the 4 pin s video cable without problems? I'd never heard of a proprietary s video out, I don't understand why dell would do that. Can I buy either or am I forced to buy the dell cable?

I'd prefer to buy the basic cable so I (and other people) can use the cable with other computers...

How many rows of pins are on the video out connection you are trying to use? I don't have a e1405 so I am not sure.

If it has the 7 pin video connection

I suggest going with the 044CTV it can be had for very cheap on ebay.

yes I just looked and it is 7 pin. I'd rather just buy one cable and be done with it instead of getting the 044CTV

Didn't you get the S-Video converter cable ? It is normally a bundled accessory. Isn't it ?

    I didn't get a video cable with my E1705.

In order to convert SVideo to Composite, all you need to do is attach pins 1 & 2 to ground (shield), and pins 3 (Luminance) & 4 (Chrominance) to signal (center).

DELL notebooks have a 7 pin S-Video connector, not the standard 4 pin S-Video connector like you have mentioned.

Reference : Pin Assignments for I/O Connectors (Inspiron 640m./E1405)

    It looks like this
    [IMG]

    1 – GND
    2 – GND
    3 - DLUMA-L (Intensity [Luminance])
    4 - DCRMA-L (Color [Chrominance])
    5 – GND
    6 - DCMPS-L
    7 – NC

However pins 1,2,3 and 4 are placed similar to 4 pin connector.

According to www.technick.net's S-Video to Composite Video RCA guide and as WackyT has already suggested connecting pins 1+2 to ground and 3 + 4 to RCA composite video should work, but they have used a 470pF capacitor to connect pin 4 (color/ Chrominance). I don't know about the importance of that capacitor, maybe you can do without it, but as I said before I'm not sure.

I use a standard SVideo cable on my E1705 with no issues. Pins 5 & 6 on the 7-pin are to access the SPDIF.

I'm thinking the capacitor is to prevent some color blooming.

Have you properly configured TV out from display properties ? The only other reason I can think of is HP using non standard pin assignments or a some sort of a proprietary signal that needs a special converter; but I highly doubt that.

I use a standard S video cable all the time on my 6000.

When in doubt though, check newegg.com. You can probably find all kinds of adapters on there.

Sorry for bring the thread back up, but I figured it's better than posting a new one :) I'm looking at the suggested part # 044CTV for the 7 pin dell s-video connection as my E1705 has this connection. Everywhere I look, the 9400/E1705 is not listed as compatible with this part. Is this just due to non updated info? Any help would be great, thanks!

BTW, first post, long time reader, this place is great.
