Greetings Everyone!
I was just curious, do most people here use a desktop and notebook? I use both, honestly, I could get by with just the desktop, but I do like the notebook as well.

having both a notebook and desktop is good. my desktop is from the prehistoric era
p4 2.0 ghzfx5500
40gb hdd
1gig ram
my laptop
asus a8jn core2duo t5500 geforcego7300 80gb hdd and 1 gig ram.
i'm mostly using my pc for surfing the net and my laptop for my homeworks -
i have
a Macbook (recently stolen... i miss it v. much) - for mobility
a 17" Macbook Pro - for bedroom
a custom built gaming machine - for gaming
a DELL desktop -for server
i probably can get by with just a MBP and the Custom Desktop. -
I have the two systems in my signature (but in case I change my sig):
Laptop-
M1330, T7100, 2GB RAM, LED, 120GB HD, 8400M GS
Desktop- Custom built
E6600, Silverstone SG03, 4GB RAM, 24" LCD, 8800GT
I'm definitely a fan of the desktop + laptop combo. If I had to do it again, I'd probably switch out the 8400M GS for the integrated Intel graphics in the M1330. I almost never play any games on the laptop and I could probably use more battery life. -
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
I have both but am very tempted to go 100% laptop. The fact that I can play games on my 1530 is a huge plus. It has a great screen but I could easily hook it up to my desktop LCD which is also a great screen, so that means photo editing and design will not suffer at all.
I am just kind of tired of having so many desktop parts lying around. And the fact that I have to go upstairs and be secluded to use it. This can be a plus sometimes I guess but I am really liking working away on the couch -
Currently i have just 1 laptop for my main use and 1 desktop as my server(ish)
-
I was 100% desktop, but at the end of last year I decided to get my first laptop after reading and watching reviews of the XPS line. Now that I have my M1530, I'm basically 100% laptop. I purchased an M1330 with the most recent "Deal Day" and I'll probably get an ASUS Eee PC in a few months so that I can drag it around and throw it against walls. (My biggest problem is how carefully I treat my M1530 right now. Like, every five seconds whenever I see a speck of dust on it I blast it with compressed air. Sad, I know.)
Do I miss desktops? Yes. A powerful laptop is no match for a powerful desktop. And I don't particularly take advantage of the portability of laptops, since I keep it mainly in my bedroom. But on the other hand, even if I never move it one inch it's still better in my mind now because there are no wires or connections and it takes so much less room. The biggest downside to me is the fact that I like a full-sized keyboard with a numeric keypad (which I now lack unless I dock, which I don't) and the fact that I dislike using the trackpad (but I have a Bluetooth mouse). -
I dont have a desktop - no need for one.
I use the notebook in my sig as my desktop replacement. Does the job perfectly, as you can imagine
Im looking to buy a M1330 as a portable notebook I can use via wireless around the house for general web browsing etc.. I'll use my M1730 for gaming or work etc. -
I only ever use laptops, I don't like to use desktops. Don't really know why, I just like the feel of a laptop better overall. I don't own any desktops either except for ones from say.......15 years ago.
-
I've been pretty much laptop only for the past 3.5-4 yrs, but I keep desktop around for good measure
It's pretty ancient now and is pretty much collecting dust in the office.
Laptop in sig, desktop as follows: custom built Athlon 1.6 GHz Thunderbird OC'd to 2GHz (this was before power ratings in the names, LOL), Abit mobo, 1 GB ram, CD-RW + DVD-ROM, 12GB + 40 GB HDD (again, 52GB total, LOL), SB Live! MP3+ sound card, ATI Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB (firmware upgraded to 9700), Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speakers (I still use these on a spare TV setup), Sony 17" LCD, Logitech DiNovo flat keyboard + BT mouse. Cost me a pretty penny back in 2000-2001 when I last built it up. The keyboard/mouse are the newest components, but they're from 2003 I recall. -
We have..
Main system: M1530
Work system: T60
Server: Custom build P4 Dual Core 4Gb, 1TB Raid 1, Lian-Li case.
Media Center: Mac Mini 1.83Ghz C2D
Wife's system: X60
We have not used desktops (except for the Mac Mini) for quite a while now. No need for them here. -
No Desktop for more than 4 years.
I was using a Inspiron 6000 as Desktop replacement and a Inspiron 700M as portable. Sold both and now I only have the M1330.
. -
Hi!
My 1530 is the only notebook I use)) And I love it
I used to have a desktop, but it pretty much died on me and went "bye bye")
-
I built my desktop about a year ago, and runs games about the same as my 1720.
-
Desktop all these years... now laptop!
-
I'm 100% laptop now. I think the main(and obvious) reason is that I don't like being tied down to one location. I play online poker and like the freedom to move around and do whatever I want while not missing any action.
-
I use only a laptop - Inspiron 9200. I don't take it to class or anything (too big), but being in college it is great to be able to easily take my computer home for breaks and visits and such, and the occasional BF2 game at my friend's house. Once I graduate and get my own place, I'll invest in a good desktop and just get a smaller laptop for work/portability.
-
i use a desktop, mainly because i think upgrading is a big thing. It really depends on your budget tho, if u have the $$ you could get a laptop over 2k that will last you as long as a laptop before it needs a further upgrade. Also i hate the lack of workspace a laptop gives when graphics and web designing, and the keyboard is not so great for gaming.. but this is just a personal preference.
-
2 years ago, I wouldn't be caught dead with a laptop ... now i own 2 and my main computer is a laptop.
The main computer is my Inspiron 1520 laptop. I take the T60 to classes (hopefully that will be getting sold soon) and the gateway is my server.
so 2 laptops and a desktop. -
i sorta really want to know how you people can stand looking at a 15" or smaller screen all day O.O i just can't do it !!!
Especially with gaming =*(
-
Use an external monitor
-
i don't believe in using external monitors, that would just make the laptop like a desktop, and i could get a desktop for the same price as a laptop with twice the power
-
Yea but then u can unplug it and take it with you, or run dual monitor.
-
What exactly is dual monitor? using both your external and laptop screen?
-
Still, I agree that I really love the full keyboard of the desktop. That's one thing I can't get over. And don't anyone say something like "get an M1730." That purchase, in my mind, makes zero sense. It's hardly portable -- I mean, it can be done, but it's not exactly fun. And the amount you pay, like $4000 for the top-line config, is ridiculous. I mean, I can barely imagine the kind of desktop you could get for that money these days. -
-
-
Well, keep in mind that you use a laptop completely differently. When you use a desktop, you're probably like four feet away from the monitor. When you use a laptop, you're more like one and a half feet away. I have no problems with it, but I'd agree that the keyboard would stink for gaming. I use a Bluetooth mouse, which is sweet, but I'm not used to the layout of the keyboard (mostly with regards to the numeric keypad being gone).
-
By the way, you can do a dual monitor with a desktop, too. All you need for either is two monitors connected to your computer and then activate the option.
-
I have one of each (details in my signature) For speed and large display, I really enjoy my desktop over my laptop. But my desktop can't sit out on the patio and read NotebookReview.com while I BBQ so the laptop gets a nod here!
-
mmm...yeah i think laptops are better for just casual use and limited multimedia...but no gaming or graphics editing=(.. . . . .btw is there any advantages to dual monitors? it seems kinda confusing to keep looking at 2 screens at 1 time
-
The only advantage to dual monitors is what you would imagine: a larger desktop. It's not confusing to look at two screens because usually the two are either close to one another (in the case of a laptop-monitor) or next to each other (two monitors). If you have two monitors, it's basically just like one giant monitor with a black band (the screen edge) that happens to lie in the middle. You get used to it very quickly.
What you do with that area is what makes it advantageous. Like all things in computers, it doesn't make a hill of beans if you don't use it. -
I have 4 laptops and 3 desktops in the house.
1 Toshiba Satellite notebook that's about 8 years old with a HDD on it's death bed.
1 Inspiron 8200 that has been relegated to kid duty. Still works great for a 6 year old notebook.
1 Inspiron 9300 that is my wife's new notebook.
The 1530 in my sig that I got about a month ago.
1 self-built XP Pro P4 2.8GHz w/ 1.5 GB DDR RAM and 2 19" NEC LCDs for CAD and CG work.
1 self-built Vista 64-bit Quad Core Q6600 2.4GHz oc'd to 3.0GHz w/ 4GB DDR2 RAM and a single 24" Samsung 245BW screen primarily used for gaming.
Yes, I'm a geek.
[edit]Oops! Forgot the last desktop. A Blueberry edition iMac circa 1999. Still works! -
It lets you have multiple windows open at the same time, such as having a game on one screen and internet on the other without having to use alt tab to minimize the game to read email or do anything else.
-
i just have notebooks, reason being that i don't have the space for a desktop, that and i tend to take my books to alot of LAN events / always taking it around friends houses.
i've currently got two notebooks now, my old Fujistu and my XPS 1730, the fujitsu i use for basic surfing around the house and letting my little brother play games on (such as oblivion, dawn of war etc), meanwhile my 1730 is my gaming rig, which i take out and about with me to events. -
I just use notebooks now since I got rid of my desktop in '05. The only thing I miss are the graphics cards..........
-
I have used both notebooks only and desktops only, nothing can replace a desktop in my opinion. What I do requires a nice desktop so I don't think I can ever go notebook only again.
-
we use both
for business
gaming
etc -
I use to use desktops all the time, but only use laptops now and am very happy with them that's for sure mine is in my sig!
-
-
I would get XPS desktop on this summer because of want play games on desktop style graphic card without any heat issue, limited power consumption and some CPU/GPU lockdown, also it will be part of replace on my legacy HP desktop that got in 2002 with very bad graphic chipset (Intel Extreme Graphic, eek...) since iMac isn't part of my truly desktop replacement.
I feel like sick when play games on MacBook Pro (both of Mac OS X and Vista), oh well but I just use Mac OS X at mainly, mostly on watch DVD movies, internet, IM and other some apps. -
I have the M1730 in my sig that I use as my desktop replacement, since I do not have a desktop at home. I also use it to play games etc.
I am looking to buy a M1330 as a more portable machine to use via wireless etc around the house/garden. It'll just be used for basic web browsing and simple tasks.
I have a work laptop (latitude) which I dont really use at home TBH.
I also have another Latitude that Im using on the wireless at the moment, but once I get my M1330 I'll sell it -
I use both... Though the Laptop is used far more often for "general stuff" and the desktop is a game/server rig.
The following are my major specs:

I have both. They are the exact same specs except for the video card (I have a 8600 in my m1530 and a 8800GTX in my desktop). Aside from that they both have 4gb ram, a 2.4 ghz core 2 duo proc and a 320gb primary hdd. This way I can keep the same stuff in the same locations on the two PCs so that I always have my stuff wherever I go. I could've done with just the laptop for this, but the ability to get a better graphics card for gaming on the desktop was the deciding factor.
-
I've been using a 15.4 inch laptop for the last few years but I'm thinking about switching to a desktop + small laptop (EEE PC style or a 11-12 incher) so I can get more gaming power + more portability. I found out about FolderShare recently so keeping files in sync between them wouldn't be a problem.
-
desktop primary, laptop is just for mobility. i would never use a laptop for primary machine. just to many limits
desktop
1) Q6600 at 3.4ghz, 4gb ddr2, 8800GTX (9800GX2 soon) BD Burner/HD-DVD Rom, primary PC, used for gaming, HD, and other stuff
2) 4400+ (Phenon soon), 2gb ddr2, 7600GT, used for server, running windows 2008 server
3) soon 4400+ from server, will be used to build HTPC, 4400+ with 8600GT is enought to playback HD files
4) cheap linux PC
laptop
1) Dell XPS 1530 -
Desktop
1) q6600 @3.6, 4gb ddr2, 8800gtx@ultra, 750GB storage
2) amd64 3000+, 1gb ddr, 6800gs, 250GB storage
3) barton 2500+, 512gb ddr, FX5600, 80GB storage
4) Celeron 500Mhz, 128mb ram, Riva TNT2, 8GB storgae
Laptop
1) waiting for my M1530 -
Both,
desktop is AMD 2.5 ghz with 2 gigs of ram, 250gig hard drive and 22" flat lcd monitor.
I use it when I'm in the basement, want to print, edit and just watch tv.
Laptop, Inspiron 1520
1.6 ghz with 2 gigs of raom and 250 gig hard drive. Use it 90 % of the time now just because i can go anywhere in the house, Sit outside you name it.
My laptop is just used for the basic's so I can be mobile.
Do You use a Desktop or just Notebook?
