I dont think anybody knows what this actually is beacause i been looking for the same answer.

From what i understand it allows you to put any A4 size picture behind it and comes standard with 3 pre printed ones (varies from time to time)

Also instead of the choice of either the special red or black cover it comes default with a silver cover which the shield clips over!

Hope that helps! Can anybody who actually owns one please correct me or provide more information.

Also the dell chat techies dont have a clue. Ive been on there twice and they cant tell me anything other than what i already know!

If you click the link, you will see what you want to know.

And, no, you can't remove the black or red cover. The personalization shield goes on *top* of that.

I'm not sure what you're saying, but the shield *will* cover the red or black surface.

I have one and it is bad ass. You can put any 8.5x11 picture or paper inside and make your top look like anything you want. Great for keeping scratches off your lid too...

Sorry if this question has been asked before...
I could not see it anywhere

    but,

Im about to order the M1710 XPS in Australia.

On the web site, it gives u an option to pay an extra $42 for a "shield"

    I have shoosen that option.

Now what i woild lke to know is

how do i word it to dell in an email that i want the "red lights" at the front of the laptop and that iw ant the red and black cover ??

im not sure they will understand me and i will then get the laptop witha different colour.

how can i word it so that they can email me back and state in writing what colours i will have and what cover colour i will get.

Alsos - any ideas on what the default colours are? or will it dffer in dfifferent countries as well..

the bacl one looks real nice like below....

The shield is plastic, and the transparent part is simply hard plastic (I do have one).

The actual LED lights are configurable by YOU in the BIOS or by using the Dell QuickSet utility. I think there are 16 colors to choose from... It can even be made to react to music etc, giving a nice disco feeling.

So, the only options you have regarding the outside are:

    1. Want the shield? Yes/no
    2. Want red metallic or black metallic lid?

I'm not 100% sure the red is even available in .au? It's not available in europe...I have the black one, and it's pretty cool.

    wow thanks man

i liked your detailed answer!!! / ino

    ./

yeah - del told me today only red is avaialbel in australia

    .
i guess red is nice anyhow
    ------
the sweet innocent ladie at dell says the red lights flashing only come in red.

i hope the bio things really works if i wanna change the colours

The touchpad with glowing "XPS" is red-only, though.
