I have a pretty pimped desktop, but I'm planning to get a laptop for Uni from dell as well. Is it useful to have both? dual screen etc?

If the desktop you have is top-notch, then get a lower powered laptop and/or an ultraportable. If your university has a VPN, you should even be able to use your laptop to talk to your desktop no matter where you are.

I spent about $2100 getting both of my PCs, and I'm glad I did.

I have a desktop and this laptop in my house, but only the laptop is technically mine (the desktop is the families, and so if I was using it, my parent's could kick me off if they wanted to go on it - hence why I got the laptop)

I have washed my hands of 'the desktop' age of computing altogether at this point.

My new angle is versatility, and the power that a modern, small laptop can bring both on the tabletop, and on the road. To this end, I'm looking to invest in a top tier M1330 and a 24" 2408WFP in the near future in order to capitalize on the ultra-power-portable lifestyle.

    It's going to be great.

I have the XPS Gen 3 desktop which was maxed out at the time (40% off go DELL!) and Im ordering a laptop soon. I think having a strong desktop and a strong laptop is great...but I wouldnt go all out on a laptop. 1500-1800 should be tops in my opinion for a laptop.

Just my 1520 at the moment. After a summer of working, I might invest in a desktop, but we'll see.

Before uni, i just had a desktop..but since i started uni 5 years ago, I bought a 600m, and now i just bought a m1330....My desktop is quite good with [email protected] C2D w/ excellent cooling, 1.65TB HD space (mostly RAID), 4GB of DDR2, 22" LCD, Z-5500, 8800GTS, etc....I play all games on my desktop and use my laptop for school mostly....i take it to all of my classes and annotate lecture notes. Also, I can now use my m1330 to take lecture recordings with the built-in mic array, now i just need to actually listen to them!

I have my laptop set up right beside my desktop and both are on most of the time. I have MSN live and google talk on my laptop, and use it to chat ...which is quite convenient, especially since we use my desktop as our TV/home theatre (hence 1.65TB of HD space...)....I don't think I could live without my desktop or laptop.

I just have my laptop. Eventually, I'm going to go the route of one ultraportable and one super-powered desktop, but I'm low on funds right now. So, my M1530 is power and portability combined.

I have a laptop and 2 working PC's. I use the laptop in my sig for working casually in front of the TV. I plan on doing some photo editing and scrap-booking with it as well. I just got it so I'm still setting things up.

I have an older desktop that I do most of my everyday BS on (e-mail, word processing, finance, etc) and a newer desktop for Photo and Video editing as well as CAD work I bring home. The older desktop is a P4-3.0 with 1.5 gig of RAM, a Radeon 8500 graphics card, two 18" monitors, a 160 gig system drive and a 250 gig file drive. This PC uses Win XP and I have all my older peripherals hooked up to it so I can still use them. The newer PC is a C2D-E6600 with 2 gig of RAM, a Radeon 1950 PRO, a 22" monitor, two 160 gig HD's (RAID 0) and a 500 gig HD for files. This machine uses Vista Home Premium. Both of these machines also have 500 gig external backup drives.

Most of my friends think I'm a little nutty for having so many computers (until they need my help ;) ) but it's a hobby. I have fun building and using them and that's all that matters to me :)

I voted yes....for now. Depending on how well my build-up of my new Inspiron 1420 goes I may get rid of my desktop (which is a P4 3GHz mish-mash of old(er) and new(er) parts).

I am rebuilding the 1420 with XP Pro as I type.

I got myself a Inspiron 1520, and a E-machine Desktop here at my Uni. But I haven't used the desktop since the day I bought my Inspiron. It's basically a stand to hold the laptop up, so I can install the usb cables conveniently.

I have several desktops but my main one is a...

    E6600 C2D 2.8ghz 4mb cache
    2gb of Corsair DOMINATOR 6400 DDR2 RAM
    Nvidia 8800gtx 900/2200 768mb RAM
    320gb Harddisk SATA2 7200rpm
    etc etc

I am getting an XPS 1530 soon. Some people may say spoilt brat or mommy pays for it, especially since I am only 18. But I have gone through countless forums before I had this and wishing I had the top gear. I had to put up with a 486 for 8 years. I worked for my PC and Laptop for a long time and now it's finally paid off.

As of now, I have the Dell 1521 (which is actually my parents that I'm using for now), and the family's old HP Pavillion 1998 bought desktop (yes, still running Windows 98, 12 gig's , 500MHZ, and 128MB, sounds like a rodent that just got ran over by a monster truck, but still ticking lol). As for myself, I'm waiting to get some extra cash (withen the next several weeks) , and am buying an HP laptop or IBM Thinkpad T61.

I have a Dell Dimension desktop that is almost 5 years old. But, I hardly use it anymore.

I also have two laptops: an insprion e1505 (typing on that one now) and an xps m1330. I use my inspiron when I home most of the time. But, I use my xps when I am not at home because it is so much smaller and lighter.

2 desktops and 2 laptops. I don't actually use the 2nd laptop since I upgraded to the one in my signature. I plan on building a new desktop and using one of the old ones as a server.

hey, can anyone teach me how to do this VPN thing?

Back on topic: I'm studying away from home in another city and yes I do have a desktop at home (P4 512mb though). So right now I'm only using my laptop in university.

Have a Sony Vaio desktop and 2 laptops, a Dell Inspiron 1520 and a IBM Thinkpad T-40. For the most part I only use the dell because I can do all my school work and still game where ever, atleast when I find the time.

Custom desktop and a relatively quick laptop, adding either an xps m1730 or m17x to the team when they arrive with 8800m gtx sli. :)
