Do you think the Vostro 1500 is fat and too heavy? I'm asking this as i want to get my sister a laptop but i also wanted the 8600 GT inside. I can only afford either the 1400 or 1500, no other make. So do you think its too fat and heavy to move around in the house?
-
Definitely not. Dell might be the world renowned brickmaker, but the Vostro is actually quite an attractive looking laptop, not to mention that if you're just moving it around in the house, it's no big deal. Even if you do travel with it, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I carry around a 10lb. Monster of a G2S. And I don't have any problem with it.
-
Thx for the info, but what about someone who puts it on their lap and weighs only 10 stone themselves? Is the laptop too heavy then?
-
if a 6 or 7 pound laptop is a possible weight issue on someones lap...then perhaps you should be looking at PDAs..
-
6 pounds is quite a bit less than 7. I just dont want to dissapoint my sister and make her think that i thought of myself (and got the 1500 for the 8600) rather than get the 1400 which is lighther. Any more opinions?
-
Manzi, no offense, but we can't tell you if your sister can tolerate the huge 1 pound weight difference.
But if your post is for real (ie you are not just starting a thread for the sake of starting a thread) conduct an experiment...Go put a couple of decent size books on her lap and see if she collapses from the strain. -
LoL ok ill do just that. I think im probably gonna have to go with the 14 inch jus to be on the safe side rather than buying the 15 inch and it turning up only to be huge.
-
If you are so worried about the weight, get the 1400. Priorities buddy. Give and take.
-
I thought the Vostro 1400 was heavy, but then again I use an XPS M1210. I can't imagine how heavy the 1500 is.
-
It's quite chunky for a 14" and 15.4", considering there are some notebooks lighter then that, for example, My V6(15") weighs 0.9lbs less and is almost half an inch thinner then the 14" 1420.
However, one needs to understand that compromises needs to be made and for such a price and specs, who cares how thick and heavy it is -
Vostro 1500 is HUGE and HEAVY. I would recommend 1400/1420 for your sister.
-
The criteria was choose the 1400 or choose the 1500... for use in the house...not for a trek to the Himalayas.
Unless you are having to rapel from one room to another in the house...how is that 1 pound significant?
and for that 1 pound difference you get 10% more screen, the optional graphics card and from what I am seeing on the overclock tests...better cooling. -
I love my 1500, bit heavy, but its soo sexy =)
-
why not Hp dv2500t or dv2000t?? They lighter than vostro 1400 and much more sleek and think design..
-
And today at least (on the USA Dell site)... for the 1500 with 1.6Ghz Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, 120GB drive, webcam and 8600M GT = $699.00.
-
Vostro 1500 isn't much different than my prev laptop, it seems a little thinner than a D810...so no heartache here. It could be a little lighter/thinner, but I wanted an 8600M GT.
As for the aesthetics, I think the Vostro black is hot stuff. The only negative I see is the cover seems to attract finger prints a bit much for my liking.
Personal opinion here: I'm not into all this foofoo color fashion crap (can probably blame Apple's marketing for the bulk of it btw). -
get that one 20 inch dell XPS and give ur sis some steroids.
no but in all seriousness, 1 pound is not a big difference. if she has her feet up on a desk and is reclining and she can barely suppport her own weight on her legs, THEN a 1500 might be a hassle for her, but again, i dont really know how old or strong your sister is. i know that by the time my sister is my age, she'll be stronger than me (gymnast).
if its that big of a concern, get a 1400 but i guarentee you'll be happier with a 1500. even if she cant support the weight, she can keep it on a desk. keeping a laptop on your lap isnt a good idea anyways cuz the intakes get blocked. and if she's that young that she cant support the weight then she shouldnt be toying around with 1500 bucks worth of equipment. -
The 1420 is pretty heavy for a 14" if you ask me as well.. but it's built VERY WELL.. The lid feels strong, the notebook is solid.. I can't see anything falling off or breaking easily.. And it's very attractive (colored lids help a lot).. The more I use it, the more I like it.

The 1500 is an awesome machine, sometimes I stare at it in amazement on how perfect it is
-
How tall is your sister? I'm a short 5'4'' and 15 inches are easily carried, just...two hands.
My 1400? One hand carrying = awesome. -
Well my sister is 18 but "body" wise she is more like a 14/15 year old. She is weak and gets asthma easily, i think that just carrying the laptop around will make it hard for her to breathe.
But then again i think im REALLY exagurating it. The thing is the laptop is for her and she may end up using it ALOT, so there may be no point for having the 8600 with less battery life and more weight if i barely get time to use it. So now im thiking the 1400 that i ordered is probably the way to go?
I might even get a xbox 360 in the end so maybe it isnt worth bothering about and i should just get her the 1400? I know i will end up regretting me not getting the 1500!!!!!! Man this is a hard decesion for me!!!! -
I currently have a 1500 in hand - a sweet machine in many ways. BUT, I've have decided that it is unnecessarily bulky and heavy. I've never owned a laptop prior to this, but felt that a 15.4" would suit my needs. However, the size and weight of the 1500 equate to a cumbersomeness that does not appeal to me. So I've opted for a 1420 - hopefully it won't be as irritatingly heavy and awkward as this 1500.
-
Well you've just made my mind up! Im probably going to get a 360 anyway so theres no point in getting a fat and think 15.4" laptop when i can have a lighter and thinner 14" laptop.
-
if thats the case then why not go even smaller?
-
-
i mean they are kinda fat but its not really that heavy to use my friend has it and i think it is great for a 15inch laptop
-
did you do the book experiment mentioned earlier? if she can take a dictionary or 3 on her lap, then she can take the vostro. its really not heavy at all. i mean if the thighs can support the weight of her body and keep her legs moving and all that junk then they should be able to handle a 15 inch laptop.
-
Its relatively fat,
compared to the G1s and the Compal IFL90 - there is no difference
compared to the macbook - its almost double the thickness.
I admit the macbook is amazing, but so is the Vostro. I personally like the all-black better.
As for weight, its not heavy at all. I typing on it on my lap, and I don't feel my legs being strained. -
Is vostro 1400 much more thinner than Vostro 1500 or not??? Thanks

Thxs for the help guys. In the end i brought the Vostro 1400 as they upped the specs and i got a good deal out of it. Plus now that i've stated college i've realised how hard it is and how i probably wont have much time to play games. Besides the 8400 GS in the 1400 will be able to play The orange Box pretty well if i decide i need to game a little.
Do you think the Vostro 1500 is fat and too heavy?
