I meant Home premium isn't worth using.. not that you can't get the DVD.. you can.

Tried twice, both support agents said that the policy does not apply to Vista Home Premium.

Thanks Greg!! I'm chatting with Dell tech support right now, I'll let you guys know how it goes. :)
They are trying to fight me on this. They say the "consumer segment" is not entitled.
    ...
Now they say it's only for Vista Ultimate, but according to the link Greg provided, they have to send a disc even it's if Ultimate.
    ...
Still on hold after he said he has to speak with his manager.
After quoting the line from Bill B at Dell, the agent said

It's a no go, he insists it's for Ultimate only, which he is wrong, but he wont budge.

No surprise there. I doubt they get any formal training, from what I can hear on the phone, they type the information you give them into the computer, to find an answer.

Yeah, but how many 64-bit applications exist? The only one I can think of is Dolphin.

I am a bit confused by the link. Some user is saying, they only support ultimate and home premium. Is this true?

Quoted from the link Greg gave, from Bill B at Dell:
So it's ANY version of vista 32 that qualifies, even though they claim to only have made Ultimate 64-bit discs, they're still supposed to ship them to anyone that's qualified for the upgrade.

That's from "DSN policy document ID 158098, 5th bullet under Policy, first sub-bullet".

64-bit applications will only increase as 64-bit becomes more mainstream.
    Plus, x64 supports 32-bit applications anyway. :) I personally think it's a worthwhile upgrade.

Just a little update. After talking with Chris_M from Dell (in the link Greg supplied), he was able to get it ordered, and the status is already shipped. :)
So that's good news. It was a real hassle to go through the normal channels though, and they refused to send an x64 disc, even the manager refused. I'm glad Chris and Bill are there to help. :)

Hi Nate, I have a Dell Inspiron that came with a 32bit Vista Upgrade disk. I read that I am entitled to a 64bit version of Vista if I should choose to want it so I woud like to order my 64 bit version of Vista.
    5:49:10 PM Agent SLCg_Nate_179627
Okay I see the Xpress disc. To receive a 64-bit version you will have to contact Microsoft for the upgrade, I apologize.
    5:49:36 PM Customer Ethan
I know I am entitled to this DVD. If you would kindly check DSN policy document ID 158098, 5th bullet under Policy, first sub-bullet.

Okay I cant argue with that may I have your company name and shipping information please. Thank you!

I gave the agent my details but never heard a reply back. After 7 minutes of nothing the chat window said: "Thank you. Your Dell Chat session has ended." So hopefully I will be seeing it in the mail soon. If not then I can just repeat the same thing. But just to let everyone else know that it is really that easy. Thanks so much Greg for the original link.

He tried telling me they don't have Home Premium in 64. So I asked for Ultimate. I am waiting now... I'll let you all know how it turns out.

    EDIT:

He said they are out of Vista Ultimate 64 and Home Premium 64. He is looking now for a date in which they will have more in stock. He pretty much said to keep trying back, and when its in stock, they will send one.

Ok, he said it looks like they won't be getting any more in, but to try back later, keep an eye on the Dell Blog thing and notebook sites, as they might get them in eventually.

He was the best chat rep I have spoken with. After he did his research on the 64 bit vista, we bull****ted for like 10 minutes about LCD screens and stuff.

That's not good news that they are out of the discs indefinately. I bet they found that customers were actually noticing this policy, etc.., and ordering it. They then decided that this was too inconvenient/expensive and are quietly shutting it down by not having any in stock.

Talked with two different people, the first guy said I didn't have a 64-bit computer. I finally asked him if he knew anything about computers because I do have a 64-bit computer. Next guy was like talking to a rock as well. Tried online chat and after a severely painful chat he said yes, you have the right to it, but they don't have 64-bit versions, and he could not do anything more about it. I though what a waste of time, I could have been slamming my head into a brick wall all that time, and got a lot more accomplished. Finally gave up because it wasn't worth it. I have read the link and all the posts, and quoted them exactly.

Yeah kind of sucks that they changed their policy to exclude Home editions of Vista from this policy. Should still be able to get 64bit Business/Ultimate if you purchased the 32bit equivalent.

Go figure...as soon as I call this in myself, I can't even get the discs.

I'm arguing that Dell had a policy at my time of purchase...if they change it they cannot retroactively screw everyone.

I'm reaching out to Chris at Dell about it, hopefully some resolution can be found. Because I think that anyone who bought a Dell prior to their posting about the updated policy should not be affected.

yea i talked to chris before Dell updated the policy, and he sent me a Ultimate x64 even though i had home premium x64.

All of the support agents said that Dell does not carry any home premium x64 versions.

Why is it you think Home Premium is useless, btw? The only feature I would miss from it would be Remote Desktop, but I usually use my laptop to connect to *other* machines, not the other way around, and as I understand it, that would still be possible. Am I wrong there?

Excellent thread Greg!!! I have similarly commented on the service nature for the Dell Rep on that thread who is a friend of mine.

I have also suggested, within the thread that those seeking assistance check this site as we have a very strong x64 following.

Wait a minute, I did not hear anything about a policy change, just that they did not have the discs (and perhaps are never getting them in). There is a difference in that in theory, at least, we could still get the discs, right? Les, what do your contacts say about this, especially for us Canadians? Much thanks, in advance :)

Yes, if you purchased anything BUT Home edition of Vista, you can get the 64-bit equivalent. Don't think it matters if it's by phone, email, or chat since the policy is the same.

My current process with Dell customer support~

    me:

I recently ordered a Dell XPS m1530 & when I reviewed the specification page of what I'm receiving I noticed it only mentioned the 32-bit edition of Windows Vista Ultimate. I would also like to request a copy DVD of the 64-bit edition!

"Per Dell policy, if you purchased 32 bit Vista of any version, you are entitled to the 64 bit DVD of the same version upon request, with the caveat that Dell does not provide complete 64 bit driver support for all platforms. XP 32-to-64 bit is excluded from this policy. If you would kindly check DSN policy document ID 158098, 5th bullet under Policy, first sub-bullet" - DELL-Bill_B

Dell currently does not provide support for 64-bit edition of Windows Vista Ultimate so the order couldn't be modified (canceled/reordered) for the 64-bit edition to come pre-installed with Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, however upon request of any customer who buys 32-bit of Windows Ultimate also has the right to request (in receive) the 64-bit edition according to Dells contract with Microsoft & dells policy (DSN policy document ID 158098). If I have to wait for the funds to be deducted from my account & receive the service tag before I'm within my full rights to receive a copy then I'll be glad to do so however I would like to keep this email alive so I don't have to start this agonizing process all over again.

I want to get 64 bit Home Premium Vista so I talked to around 5 tech support people and all of them said I can't get the dvd since I fall in the "home and small business" division. Where can I find a download of it since I am done trying to get them to give me one. Also, on the following microsoft page: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/64-bit.aspx it says I can purchase 64 bit media if I bought Vista as a retail product. But can I get it even though I got vista through Dell?

Here is Dell Vista x64, I know it has Ultimate but I don't know if it has the others. I think it does. I have tried this and it works. Also it doesn't need a serial or activation since it is the Dell disc as long as you use it on a Dell computer.
This doesn't contain a serial so its not illegal, its just the disc image.

Removed by Mod...do not repost it.

That's kind of a pain that it is in 40 different pieces. I'm thinking about installing Vista x64 on my laptop as I have it on my desktop and I like it.

You can install it on any Dell computer, it doesn't ask for a serial. What you do with it is your business and keep that to yourself. If you Vista Home Premium 32 bit if you upgrade thats on you.

Why can't Dell offer the damn 64-bit ISO file for us for download? It would be cheaper then sending it out (which apparently they have given up on?)

I asked the same question DFI Fan. The tech support person said "because it is an OS" they don't offer it for download.

Which doesn't make much sense considering its all but useless if you don't have a key or a Dell BIOS. Of course you can fake a Dell BIOS...but still how many people do that?

Rapidshare Free is one download at a time at 70kb/s. So yes it will take sometime to download them but look at it this way, you have it forever and its worth it.

    Guys,

D not post an ISO image of the disk. That is copyright infringement aka Software piracy(its Dells intellectual property) and will not be tolerated on NBR. Just because it doesnt have a crack/key included doesnt make it legal.

If you qualify for the 64bit disk/media, follow the instructions on the first page to obtain it...if you dont, then buy a retail 32bit Microsoft vista OS and get the 64bit from Microsoft or convince Dell to change their policy.
